Wrestling Transfers

Wyoming adds Sam Mitchell from the University of Buffalo. He qualified for the NCAA championships and went 1-2 at 197 pounds accounting for Buffalo’s lone win of the tournament this past season. Seems to be a good get!

Pokes add 165 pound transfer Brant Whitaker from Missouri. Doesn’t appear he ever cracked Missouri’s lineup but I’d suppose he adds depth.

Also, got a transfer from OU. (157) Really looking forward to next year, building some good depth.

Yes - Jared Hill. He was a starter at OU. He is also a 2 time NCAA my qualifier. I’d imagine he is an immediate impact.

Very good signing
Welcome Hill to Wyo

NCAA has lifted the 9.9 scholarship cap for wrestling. It has increased total schollies and team rosters to 30 starting next year. Curious how many schollies Wyoming will finance.

Sadly, this change in the scholarship limit is going to effect Wyoming negatively. When schools like Penn State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, etc have 30 scholarships to offer, that's 20 less athletes for the next school. That will trickle down to the "lower" schools.

I don’t know. Will be interesting. Would a wrestler prefer to be a third stringer at Oklahoma State or a starter at Wyoming?

I think this will create more scholarship opportunities for wrestlers which is a good thing. But it could have the opposite consequence if schools just decide to drop wrestling due to the increased costs of fielding a good lineup with schollies.

I am not sure how this is going to work for UW. The 9.9 limit was not working due to all the NIL $, some schools (Iowa, OK State, Penn State, etc.) had over 40 kids on their roster and 30 of them did not pay their own way. Most of the top schools will have to cut kids out of the program to reach the limit and could provide some opportunities for schools like UW. The Cowboys had I believe 32 kids on the roster last year, so the question going forward is how does UW fund 30 Scholarships? Interesting times!

And it’s actually more than 30. If they add an additional 20 wrestling scholarships, title ix will compel 20 more women’s scholarships. This is why I see sports like wrestling taking a big hit. Most schools aren’t going to want to fund to that level.

To me, the new scholarship limits are just another way for the biggest programs to get bigger. No one at our level can afford to expand like that.

wyosports made a good point though. They already had that many scholarships due to NIL. This allows other schools, who may have the ability to fund scholarships but not NIL infrastructure, to match.
