With the New Focus on Academics

If you don't know, how would we? Oh, I get what you are trying to say...

My thoughts are that it is the responsibility of the student-athlete to graduate, not the responsibility of the coaching staff. The coaching staff is responsible for maintaining the APR, but the ultimate responsibility falls on the student-athlete (with help from the support staff) to complete their degree (or come back to finish it). It is their future after all.

Of course, it is also my thought that we shouldn't hand out contract extensions for 6th place finishes, so what do I know?

Brandon Ewing did get his degree in 4 years, so a big congrats to him! Although, I don't think he should have left the AA floor like he did right when he got his degree. But at least he came back in.

My question wasn't so much as to dismiss the student responsibity in this as it was confusion,especially with Ogirri.

Sean was obviously eligible when he left WSU to be able to transfer and ago on scholarship here.He then sat his fourth year..During which time he had to maintain eligibilty.He was obviously eligible at the start of this year and had to remain so in order to play during conference. So that come out to 4 1/2 years of classes and eligibilty compliance. So with the new academic focus and resources alloted to mens basketball he should have graduated.I don't know if he did or didn't but do know he didn't particiapte in the event.

Johnson was eligible after graduating from JUCO.His entire tenure here was under the new academic focus..He would have also had to be eligible and academic good standing finishing his 1st year and at least the first semester of his senior year.

Seniors do not effect APR.So the only yardstick to use is them being eligible to play during their time here.

I had posted previously that my judgment on academic improvment would not be just being eligible to play but to graduate players when their playing days are over.

Jay Straight was the last player to earn a degree from the basketball program.Chris Anderson was the only player that comes to mind that was ruled ineligible to play based on academics.There were of course players that left the program and pissed away the education though most that left and transferred to other programs were in good standing.

So as it stands, while we get back the one scholarship lost we have not improved in graduation..CBI tournament not withstanding we have not improved on the floor either.

Brandon left the floor because he was asked to participate in a photo op for the university following commencment.He also had family members who traveled to see him..Brandon has never had a problem spending time with the Cowboy faithful.

In regards to the product on the floor, I agree.

In regards to academics, I don't know enough to comment. What I do know is that our APR is improving. That is an important step. It needs to be maintained and improved further obviously, but because of the potential negative impacts, it can't be ignored.

I don't know Johnson and Ogirri's personal situation, but in Johnson's case, he has been in college for 4 years and has attended 3 institutions. It is hard enough for many non-athlete students to graduate in 4 years from one institution. If you add on the complications of transferring credits multiple times from a 4 year to a JC and then to a 4 year, all in different states I imagine it can be quite difficult. Especially if there was a change in majors during that time. Is TJ going to come back to finish his degree? That is really the important question.

Cool, good to know. Just appeared to us in the audience that he was trying to somehow distinguish himself from the other 1000 or so graduates (i was there to see my little sister finally get her degree!). Honestly, I've always been amazed with athletes who obtain their degrees in 4 years. Especially some of the athletes at Mines. The dedication to do that is very impressive.

I think while difficult te NCAA rule change some years ago that scholarships pay for summer school helps the athlete to either get ahead or make up for some setbacks..

HAHAHA do you really think that Brandon has to set himself apart since he is only the 2nd player in at least 5 years to walk during comencment? I have spent enough time in Laramie to know that quite a few people already know who he is and they have treated him great during his time there.

Thats to bad..Sean is a nice kid and I hope he finds what ever he looks for in life.
