being in washington state is hard for a poke fan. Listening in to the radio broadcast, I have some opinions:
Wyoming made a ton of mistakes last night. Penalties all over the damn place!
-However... last night we had a hell of an offensive improvement. Many times though, penalties hurt us. There were some sustained drives that give me hope for a team that in the past was not very effective. Some people think acs was an all conference qb. And I do believe there some fantastic things about his game... but most of his strong attributes came to life after a play would break down. Having him run for his life trying to keep a play alive. He was a hell of a scrambler, but took many sacks. His weakness (or maybe arroyo's) weakness was that our spread never really looked like a spread. In order for us to get a receiver in space we would have to let the play break the defense down.
Now i didn't get to watch the game last night, but from the radio broadcast, there were many times that dave walsh's words would be so far behind the play that he would have to catch up after the play was already dead. He would be talking about something, then be like "oh and there goes herron for 32 yards... WOW!"
That sounds more like a spread to me. I think this is due mostly to brandon, and nearly as much to smith.
So, looking outside of the penalties, our offense was able to put together sustained drives AT the "time" the play was suppossed to be executed. That to me is very exciting. Only one game in... so we will have to check back to that later
-Now, back to the mistakes. Penalties are a players fault, unless its an illegal substitution or "like" penalty. Pass int, holding, offsides, unsportsman-like conduct... those are all player faults! And they can be corrected. We started some youth yesterday, and its the first game of the season. I would think many of the players will be paying a price for there in-game infractions this week. They must learn.
-Defense.... UGLY! it really was a horrid performance. Weber tore us apart. We had very little pass rush... the run did whatever it wanted, and the play action was well executed against us. We did learn that we have speed in the secondary, but many mental mistakes. There was a ton of material to break down and use to teach our players what not to do. I have a feeling it will be a long week for them. Maybe they come out with their hair on fire next week.
all i can say is "we won thank god"
one week of us evaluating our team is not going to show us concretely if we have improved in overall rank or status. We sucked last year. WE SUCKED LAST YEAR. we have sucked since the 97. Everybody here is looking for a top three finish in the mountain west. Our strength during the glenn's early years was a top 10 defense... but we still sucked record wise, with late season collapses. Even with a good defense... wyoming finished in the bottom five.
We have to score in this league. Last night we showed that we are headed in the right direction. Can our offense produce again next week? Can our defense play like we want it too?
I don't know.
But, we hired an offensive coach to come in here and bring some touchdowns with him. He is slowly starting to give us what we, and burman asked him to do. Get some points on the board to compete.
Some of us are angry over last night, some are optomistic. Its cool, think whatever you want. But know this... we are in the start of smith's days at wyoming, in a spread with pretty good talent around him. and brandon as his puppet master.
God i hope that next week we win with a little bit more cushion.
