In reading stuff on the Minnesota boards (Minnesota fan too, sorry), their Def Coordinator put it about as well as I've seen it described:
The star ratings was done to create interest in college recruiting and it has done that. It has also generated a lot of money. But we use our own evaluation. I would rather win on game day than on signing day.

Stars mean nothing. Look at our class last year. For JUCO players, Boyland was rated an 81*** and Stanton was rated a 70**. We all know how Stanton panned out last season.

I wouldn't say the stars mean "nothing." One important aspect here that we don't have the numbers for is: how many kids of each star rating end up actually playing college football?
If there are only 5 5 star players per recruiting class, and 4 out of those 5 make it to the NFL vs 50,000 0-2 star players and 100 make it to the NFL, then obviously the ratings DO have some kind of value.
I'd say it matters, but not nearly as much as some people make it seem. Unless we start having undefeated seasons, Wyoming will never compete for the highest rated players (unless somehow an incredibly highly rated player managed to be born and raised in the state), because it's Laramie. We'll always have to look for the diamonds in the rough and make sure we win because of development and coaching.
All this said, I get annoyed when I see even the sheep landed a 4 star recruit (at least he's tiny, so maybe he'll be destroyed by our safeties/linebackers).

Hmm.....it would be ignorant to suggest they mean absolutely nothing. Arguably the Top 3 non-AQ QBs of all time statistically....Derek Carr, Kellen Moore, and Colt Brennan....were all 4-star QBs. That's pretty incredibly accurate if you think about it.
I think the star ratings are fairly irrelevant as to who gets into the NFL. But as to how things turn out in college football? Bama has had the top class 3 years out of the last 5......sounds about right national title wise!
Of course there are diamonds in the rough like Brett Smith. But you're delusional if you think you'll find an entire team loaded with NFL guys who got overlooked in recruiting. Its a "here and there" type of deal. A more telling stat would be: of those 3-stars or less guys that play in the NFL, which school has the most represented? Cause it seems pretty scattered.
Wyoming is ranked at the bottom of most recruiting rankings. No shocker there....only a few random seasons in the Glenn era was that not the case. But Bohl offered a ridiculous amount of guys without a single FBS offer. Like I've said before...time will tell if he's either a developmental genius and truly a special coach across the football spectrum, or this could go really badly for Wyoming. Only time will tell.

IMO the big difference in recruiting stars lies in the 0-3 star group. There are plenty of 0 star guys that are deserving of 2 or even 3 stars. Plenty of 2 that deserve 3+ (I.E. Brett Smith). But where the rankings seem to hold true (generally) is in the 4 and 5-star recruits. These players are generally considered the cream of the crop by everyone. So while I think that Wyo picking up mostly 0-2 stars isn't necessarily a bad thing, if we were to ever pick up a 4 or 5 star recruit I would be much more excited with that than upset that we are "only" getting 2 star kids.
I'm going to mark this thread and two years from now I will bring it back up and see how all our predictions held up. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. One other thing to consider about this recruiting class, it was done in 28 days with a new coaching staff that was not even complete until just a few days before NLI day.

Bohl Will get kids that can TACKLE with 1 star and make them starters. That's how he rolls
For some reason, I get the feeling that Bohl is either going to either do extremely well at UW or fail miserably. I can't put my finger on it, but I just feel like we are either going to be in the top 25 in 3 years…or we are going to be staring at a record of 0-12. I know which one I prefer, but it's going to be entertaining either way.
