Why is Florida in Natl Champ Game?

Why is Florida in the National Championship game? they only beat 2 ranked teams in #17 Georgia and #4 Alabama, and LOST to #24 Mississippi.

If a MWC team had a record like that they wouldn't even get a BCS Bid, much less a chance at the championship.

At least Oklahoma beat 5 ranked teams, #12 Cincinatti, #11 TCU, #8 Texas Tech, #14 Oklahoma St, #23 Missouri, and lost to #3 Texas.

I have asked that question many times. I have argued for over a month with many people that the Utes should have been there and that is a hard argument for a Pokes fan to make.

Florida is in it for 3 reasons.....

1. They beat then # 1 ranked Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

2. UF is from the SEC, Supposedly the greatest conference of all-time.

3. They have Tim Tebow for their QB and ESPN loves him!

Yeah, these computer rankings are a little wanky. Not a whole lot makes sense. However, there's an outside shot at Utah being a national champion, and that coming from the Associated Press poll, which is not part of the BCS formula.

MrTitleist, if that did happen, coming from the Associated Press, would that make Utah co-national champions with Florida?

It would be a split national championship.. as the AP does not recognize the BCS. Back in the 90s there were a few splits. Tennessee was involved in one, I believe, as was Michigan.

1990- National title was split between Colorado and Georgia Tech
1991 Washington and Miami (FL) shared the title.
1997-Michigan and Nebraska shared the title.

It happened in 2003 also, with LSU winning the BCS game and USC winning the AP Championship.

This is a good article, but this part bothered me:

"Utah played just one game on ESPN this season – a September victory at Michigan. It (and the rest of the leagues’) other games were carried on Versus and the league-owned MountainWest Sports Network., which reaches less than three million homes. Nationally, you needed a satellite system to watch the Utes.

'I think you can find Utah if you want to find it,' Craig Thompson, the Mountain West commissioner, said.

You can. And you’d think the BCS would require voters to do so. Naturally, it doesn’t."

Sorry, but this is dodging the question re: the .mtn distribution problems. You can't spurn ESPN, put all your games on obscure/unavailable networks, and then complain TOO loudly when people haven't watched your champ play. It's not acceptable for people who don't watch the games to have votes, but it's also problematic for our commish to start whining when people aren't watching the games. Ultimately it may have been a good move, but we won't see the fruits of this deal for a while. Meanwhile, we're stuck bemoaning lack of exposure when that, to some degree, has been the MWC's fault.

The WAC had a lot of games on ESPN this year.. and they were definitely not the caliber of conference the MWC was.

The WAC is far weaker than the MWC. Unfortunately, my buddies in Hawaii won't EVER admit it!
