Why don't we coach our guys to tackle?

I don't give a shit what you try and tell me. We've had this same problem since Breske left. We never wrap up. One guy holds the guy up and gets drug for seven yards while five guys run around the edge of him and try to strip the ball. It's been going on for four years. That's not a bunch of stupid kids doing what they want, it's a defense that is coached to go for strips instead of fundamental tackling. There's no way around that.

The definition of insanity is doing the same STUPID shit and expecting different results. We've been doing this for four years and I'm f'ing sick of it.

Pull your head out of your ass Dave. It's not going to be your defensive coordinator's ass on the line. Your heads on the chopping block this time.

Well....they were for a few games there. I really don't know if Texas St. was a return to 2012 form, or a complete aberration. The defense had looked pretty good compared to previous years up until this game.

Guess we'll know more in the coming weeks. UNM looks very bad.....but CSU hung 59 points on UTEP. Sure, it was UTEP...but since when does CSU hand 59 on anyone? They'll be a challenge for the defense. An opportunity to prove Texas St. was a fluke.

"Okay guys, this is what we want, what we need. Whichever of you is the first guy to make contact, DON'T hit him to hard. Whatever you do, don't put your face in his belly, don't wrap you arms around him, don't lift him up, and don't drive him to the ground. Just grab ahold of an arm or a hand full of jersey. I don't care what you've heard at every level of football since Pop Warner. We do things a little different. We NEED you to hit the guy softly, lean on him a little bit, and hold on like a Cowboy at a pig wrestling contest. If he drags you through the first down chains, that's exactly what we want. The rest of you, run up to our defender as all 300 pounds of him is getting drug 10 yards by a 5'6" guy that weighs 185. Your job is to grab the ball and pull on it. Don't worry about the offensive player. Get the ball and pull. If it's not coming out, come to the sideline, grab some lube, run back out there, lube up the ball, and pull on it again. You'll have time for this because our inept tackler will still be getting drug down field by the time you get back. Let's go get em Cowboys. Cowboy tough on three."

You thought our defense looked "pretty good" in the AFA game?

Maybe he was referring to the powerhouse Idaho & UNC offenses that the D looked good against?! 42-10 & 35-7.

I've thought they've looked pretty bad all year. Huff started the season with 18 tackles, or something rediculous against the Huskers. If you're safety is making that many tackles it's because no one in the front seven is making any tackles.

I'm just frustrated because we've been coaching our kids to strip the ball since DC got here and we still have the same problems we had then: missed tackles and lack of fundamental tackling skills. That's not the kids fault. We have strong athletic kids.

The coaches need to dump the stripped ball drills and replace them with fundamental tackling drills. We've known that for years and we're still doing it.

With big power backs like Abdullah, Lowe, Ajayi, etc you have to go for the legs and wrap up. You can't tackle the upper body and bring big backs down, and Lowe trampled us. If you watched Denver yesterday vs. Philly the Bronco defenders were all over LeSean McCoy's legs and he went down immediately. Cowboy defenders were tackling high and getting drug for A LOT of yards after contact. I bet UW ranks REALLY low defensively in YAC.

I can't argue much there. When we were tackling we did a pretty good job of stopping them. When we tried to strip the ball, they usually ran all over us.

I watched the game online and I will say Texas State defense looked pretty tough and came well prepared to play us. Our defense wasn't nearly as prepared and that probably cost us that game.

Texas State reminded me alot of Wyoming back in the middle of the last decade. They couldn't score points but they sure could stop the other team from scoring. Too bad our defense made Texas State look like they could do what they wanted on the run game.

Remember that Boise game back in 2006 where the defense held BSU to 45 points under their scoring average? This game reminded me alot of that game.

I just don't understand why we went through the motions of retaining Marty English, firing Marty English, and bringing in Chris Tormey just so we could do the same thing again.

If you're not stopping the run because of poor tackling, maybe, just maybe, you should abandon the idea of trying to strip the damn ball and just teach the guys to blow up the ball carrier every time you get the chance.

This team needs fundamental tackling drills and we don't need, under any circumstances, drills teaching defenders how to strip the ball. Let's just worry about getting the guys to the ground and let luck and opportunity deliver us turnovers.

The entire Texas State game was like Deja Vu all over again.

Welcome to D-1 football, no one coaches tackling, it's expected that you can already tackle if you make it to this level. Not saying I agree, just that's how it is.

So your point is that most of our defense shouldn't be playing "D-1" football?

We haven't been able to truly stop a D-1 football team in the past 3 years so maybe there is truth to this statement.
