Why cant WYOMING be the next Boise State?

ItSucksToBeACSURam said:
We shouldn't be trying to be the next Boise State. If we want to emulate another college program, we should look east to Nebraska. We should not want to become a flash in the pan or a fad school but one of tradition that every member of our state wants to support. Believe me, I hate the Huskers like any good Wyoming fan should but I can't help but admire the support their state has for their school. You ever been in a small Nebraska town on a Saturday in the fall? Good luck finding anything open. They close business because they love their Huskers so much. They recruit their own state. Before you jump my shizz, I know they have a much bigger base to recruit but still. Good players in Nebraska want to STAY in Nebraska. Husker football is feverish. I really wish Wyoming would catch the Brown and Gold Flu. I hate their school but can't help but admire what they've done to reach every corner of the state. As always, GO POKES!!
And to think it all started because of a former Wyoming HC.

The thing I am liking, is that a lot of people who have responded believe like I do, that Wyoming football is:

1> A sleeping giant that can be awakened by the right set of circumstances.

2> That the football program should be a bigger deal to the ENTIRE state of WYOMING.

I don't think that Laramie is truly at 30k yet, they still count the 10k that come to UW on that population during school, yes it has gotten better and has a few more things that I truly wish we had when I went to school here. Funny thing is I never really cared for Laramie either, but it is unique and from what I see alot of these athletes come to school and then they stay and get a good job and live in Laramie for the rest of their working lives. People bash it, but it is what it is, yes it's better and yes the weather in Jan sucks, but there are worse places out there (not many, but some)

Now that my job removed location restrictions Laramie is my next stop just need to get everything together. TBH never thought I would even consider moving back to Wyoming but man being able to go see the Pokes play every home game that is something I would love.

Good news. Hope everything can get sorted out so you can return to Laramie. Moving can be a little annoying in the winter months.

Yeah, right now we don't have a Burger King. They tore down the old one and should have a new one built by sometime in December.

+1 I remember moving from Casper to OKC in January of 1991. Thankfully the weather was nice enough to not be a problem. I miss home. :(

I grew up in Wyoming 2- 13 in Rock springs, 13-18 in Laramie, 18-22 in Cheyenne if I go back to the state it will most definitely be Laramie to go to Pokes games!

If I move back to Wyoming, it'll be Casper. I grew up there (first 17 years of my life) and a lot of my friends are still there.

I know Wyoming did some tourist spots on t.v. this year. But they should be promoting the state as a place to live and do businesss. I live in fort collins now. Our sales tax is nearly 8 percent. Property taxes on commercial buildings is insane. And we have a state income tax.

You can take a lot of winter vacations with the tax savings alone from living in Wyo.. I understand a lot of Jackson hole residents have a home there just to declare themselves part year residents so they pay less income tax in their own state.

I think Wyo. could grow significantly if the powers that be in the state made the effort. The question is: do they really want growth or not?

No offense, I'm asking an honest question, but what do people do for work in Laramie? Other than the University or hospital, who else hires for positions that seem to be more long term (i.e., career) fields? There doesn't seem to be a lot of business, technology, or professional service occupations in town.

Well that is a loaded question, Oil Field work is all over Wyoming and Laramie is no exception. Myself working for Apple I could be there working there home based so all in all obviously it's no metro area so my experience being away from there for so long I'm not sure how it is today but Oil Field work will always be part of Wyoming.

That was one of the major reasons I moved out of Laramie. I had a software job, but there are very few of them in Laramie, so the salary comparisons are bad and people take advantage of you big time. Second reason was that we had to go out of town way too much to get clothes and stuff. Unless you want to wear western-style clothing or what they sell at Wal-Mart, your options are severely limited.

I love Wyoming as a state, but it's having a hard time competing in a lot of areas... Cheyenne's been trying to bring in high-tech jobs, but they still have a hard time finding quality talent, which is why for example Sierra Trading Post recently gave up and decided to set up another shop in Fort Collins as well (rather than expanding their software team in Cheyenne).

I'm not surprised at all, when I lived in Cheyenne I took the 85 an hour south to Greeley every day for work.

MAJOR LEAGUE KUDOS to virtually everyone who responded to this issue with some very well thought out ideas and theories...now let me bring it to the next level: Is there anything WE all can do, in order to bring about some of the positive change that will spur the action that will result in WYO football becoming BIGGER and BETTER? Anything realistic, I should say.
Laramie folks could start by spending their dollars locally instead of heading to Ft. Collins to buy things that are just as available in Laramie. Support your local merchants and restaurants. Seems CJC and the university could do a better job of cross-marketing UW events (not just athletic) with local merchants to encourage locals to buy locally, and at the same time, gin up attendance and interest in UW Athletics and events.

If more investors saw more success in Laramie, choices would expand with ventures.
As a long time Laramie resident (21 years) who left for Denver a year ago, fuck the Laramie business owners. They're the worst part of living in Laramie. Especially for a lefty like me, who wants to shop and spend money locally, they make it hard. Their hours of operation are ridiculous, and they don't carry anything. Like, nothing. I needed some flooring tiles, when I was home on days off. I went to both local shops, and they didn't have anything in stock that was on their displays. "We can order that for you." Guess what? I can fucking order that for me, cheaper than you. I came in here to buy something. Only one music pro shop in town. Buddy needed a string winder and tuner for a guitar. Went in. "Oh, we don't have that in stock, but we can order it for you." You're the only fucking music pro shop in town and you don't have a guitar tuner or string winder in stock? WTF?? Stoooopid.
In short, fuck the Laramie business owners. They made their own beds.

That definitely beings back the memories of living there, Back then I wasn't really into computers so I never would have had a reason to look for something but now thinking about that I would be willing to bet I couldn't find shit in town if I needed a part lol.

Sad thing is that isn't just a Laramie thing it's an entire state thing, Cheyenne usually being slightly more viable due to population but I can certainly remember the same shit in Rock Springs like 1 local computer store on center street by the Ford Store and the guy had somewhat of a descent stock but everything was overpriced and out of date.

It's ok i'm willing to forgo local access to the modern world for the ability to watch my Pokes at home in sports.
