Who's coming to Austin

Hey guys, still a ways from the season, but I'm bored. And the offseason, as usual, sucks. I was here for a while last year before game trying to provide some insight on the Horns, while getting some from you guys.

First of all, congrats on the bowl win against Fresno. That should be great to lead into the upcoming season.

Second, I wanted to say again what a great time I had in Laramie last year. Great trip all around. Great state, great fans (apart from some drunk students, ha), great stadium, etc. Would love if we could schedule some more games. I hope all of the Texas fans that joined me last year were respectful. We all know we all have some bad fans.

Now, who's gonna make it down to the Great State of Texas for this years game?!? Should be pretty warm, luckily it's a 6:00 kick so it'll cool off a little when the sun goes down (a little). I encourage everyone to come if possible. You'll love the city, stadium, and hospitality. Feel free to ask any questions about the team, city, hotels, restaurants, campus, night life, whatever and I'll do the best I can to answer. I'm also going to invite everyone to our tailgate. I'll give more specifics closer to the game, but we always have a huge tailgate complete with kegs, jager machine, shot blocks, tvs, Texas women and good music. And we always like to welcome opposing fans in for a beer and good conversation.

Good luck this year guys, I'll check back as much as I can.

As I said in an earlier post last month our house is a "mi casa es su casa" for those of you from WYO that need a place to stay. After all we have a UW grad for a daughter-in-law.

We play Texas in 2011 as well correct? I'll try to make it then since that will be the year we win in Austin. I was just thinking about Texas playing in Wyoming and a question crossed my mind. Has Texas played in a snow game in a while? I thought they might have played in one in Boulder once in a while, but I was just curious. I thought how nice it would be to have Texas come back up to Laramie during a snow storm.

Thanks for the invite folks! Seems like some good people down there unlike in SLC.

How's your team looking? I was looking at Rivals.com (the orangeblood thing) and saw that your 2011 class pretty much looks finished and with all 3-5 star guys. I wouldn't say that UT has to "recruit" too much. Hopefully we have a good one down there!

2012, actually. Which means, if I'm not mistaken, we will have both Texas and Nebraska on the schedule that year.

Yeah it's 2012 for the third game.

We played a snow game in Lincoln in 2006. That's the only one that I can think of. I'd be down for a snow game in Laramie :)

We've got some question marks, but we're looking pretty good. I think most are considering Gilbert (QB) a question mark because it's his first season starting as a Soph. But we saw what he can do last year against Bama. My opinion is that's the biggest game he'll ever play in, and he came in unexpectedly and did ok despite the coaches not giving him anything for half of the game.

Still concerned with the OL. They were average last year, and if I think they were above average (which any team that wants to contend for a title, can't have an average line) we don't look so bad against Nebraska and we win the Championship. We're adopting more of a downhill running game, supposedly. So we'll see how that works out.

I gotta go to work, but I'll get back on later and provide some more insight.

I think our running game is still kind of a question mark. It was OK last year, but not really championship good. We return everyone from last year and I expect Tre Newton to start, with Cody Johnson (power back) and Fozzy Whitaker to get a lot of carries. I think we'll see more I formation this year and a less running out of the shotgun. Gilbert is a good athlete and can scramble, but he's not going to be able to run like Colt did.

We'll need some WR's to step up. Losing Shipley hurts. Malcolm Williams should be our big time guy this year (if he can hang onto the ball). Kirkendal is a serviceable receiver (scored in Laramie last year), Marquis Goodwin is one of the fastest players in the country, and DJ Monroe is also a speedster that should get some catches. We got two tremendous receivers in the last recruiting class that I expect to play pretty early cause they are that good.

Not sure who will be returning punts, but Goodwin and Monroe will probably be the fastest kickoff return duo in the country. Both returned td's last season (ill post some videos if I have time later).

There are some big holes to fill on defense (Kindle, Houston, Thomas all went in the top 2 rounds), but we have some very talented players to fill them. To add what we already have, we got the #1 LB in the nation Jordan Hicks out of Ohio and one of the top DE's in the nation in Jackson Jeffcoat whom I both expect to get playing time as true freshmen. Lost one of our top tacklers in Rod Muckleroy at LB, but we get one starter back that missed last season with an injury and we saw the Keenan Robinson grow into a great LB at the end of last year. Even with the loss of Earl Thomas (IMO easily the best DB last year and should have been the Thorpe winner), our secondary is going to be very salty. Aaron Williams is already labeled as the top lockdown DB in the Big 12 and is projected as a first round pick next year. Add in the return of Curtis Brown, Chykie Brown and Blake Gideon and you have a top ranked secondary. Christian Scott should replace Thomas at saftey, hard hitter.

That's a decent breakdown for now, I can elaborate more on different positions/players if wanted. The big 12 is pretty open this year with Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska as the front runners. I could see us losing a few games if we have some injuries. But we will be very good and don't expect much of a dropoff from last year. Its all on the shoulders of Gilbert, as he is one of the most hyped qbs to come to Texas. We shall see, but I am getting very excited with our potential.

Whew, now...what do the pokes lose/return? How did the QB situation shake out last year? I don't remember who finished out the season.

Some of the other boys can add, but here is some of it. QB is Austyn Carta Samuels. He was the true freshman last year. He won us many games in the 4th Qtr including the New Mexico Bowl against Fresno st. If you haven't seen the Pokes stuff the nations leading rusher four times from the one foot line, then you haven't seen football http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FmGPZ019DM. Too bad most of that DL are gone. Big holes on DL especially moving to a 4-3 but some of the guys who were LB's were basically playing DE, so I would say the DL interior is more of a issue. OL can always get better. One Juco kid quit during spring drills and a one OL was just dismissed from the team. RB should be pretty solid. Alvester Alexander showed his breakaway speed last year with a couple of long TD runs including one in the New Mexico Bowl. After him, it's pretty thin, but we have some recruits that people are really high on. Heck, we played a lot of true freshman last year, so why not this year? WR's can always get more athletic. Leonard is solid, but he's more of the possession type guy with size. We need that homerun hitter. I don't think anyone thinks he is currently on the staff, but we have definitely upgraded that position from last year. We'll see how a couple of Juco WR's turn out. I let the other boys throw in their few cents.

Very nice goal line stand. We had one a few years ago where Rice had 11 plays (due to penalties) inside the 5 and didn't score. Alway awesome to watch.

Here are a few clips.

6:14 mark is Goodwins KO return. Also in the video #9 is Malcolm Williams and #11 is Kirkendall that I mentioned earlier.

Here are the highlights of the Bama game. You can see Gilbert's mistakes, but you can also see his potential. He got zero help from his receivers other than Shipley, lots of drops that would have been huge. His line didn't help much, but some of that goes to crediting the Bama DL.

That goal line stand was a lot of fun last year. What a way to start the bowl season.

The guy that was in on three of the four tackles on that stand has moved to defensive end from linebacker. His name is Josh Biezuns. He should be very good. Another linebacker moved down as well. Gabe Knapton, top 20 in tackles last year, moved to end. He should be a natural at that position. Wyoming has had some pretty salty roughnecks on the line the last couple of years. This years version should be good as well. They'll be a lot faster. That's the theme on defense. Speed. Our entire secondary is back, with both of Texas own Gibson brothers. The secondary has had a tendency to get beat deep occasionally. I think experience will help out in that department. The linebackers are all going to be speed demons. I expect the season to start with Brian Hendricks at middle linebacker backed up by Oliver Shober. By the end of the year I wouldn't be suprised if Shober pushes Hendricks out wide to get both of them on the field. The other linebackers spots will be Ghali Muhammad, the guy that scored the touchdown on you guys last year, and probably Devin Harris. Devin Harris is locked in a battle with a converted DB named Keith Lewis. All of our linebackers can run and we are two deep at linebacker. Todd Knight will figure in there somewhere. He's too good to keep off the field.

We've got a legit punter and field goal kicker. We're hoping Watts stretched his range on kicks but he sure is clutch and accurate for a young kid. Our special teams should be much improved from last year. We have another year of DC's speedy recruits on the field and some young guys wanting to make plays.

On offense we have a capable two deep at halfback in Alexander and Konkolongo. They are both very mature players for their age and coached well to protect the ball.

ACS is the most improved player on the team this year. He has an ability to make plays out of nothing. I love the kid. He's the best qb we've had since Tiller was coaching us.

At WR we added some legit speed as well. Both are jc transfers, but they can run, they can catch, and they get you yards after the catch. Utah tried to come in and take them from us late in the recruiting game but couldn't do it. They should take some pressure off our possession receivers. I think David Leonard is in for a very big season. You guys probably already know to look out for Dave Christensen tight end recruits. You played him at Missouri. We've got a couple of them. David Tooley and TJ Smith will get some balls this year.

Our offensive line is improving. We've taken some depth hits there recently, but we do have some guys that can do the job. DC is a former o-linemen so you know that position is one of expertise for the Pokes. The players are very smart linemen. It's hard to confuse them.

The challenge facing Wyoming is our schedule. We have the most difficult schedule in the country. We have to play at Texas in the second week of the season. We play Boise at home the following week, we host AFA(a young team that routed Houston last year in Bowl Season) the following week, we go on the road to Toledo, @ TCU, home against Utah, and finish it out by going to face BYU in Provo. After that we still have to deal with our rivalry game against CSU and a rapidly improving SDSU team. We face three teams that finished in the top ten last year and played in BCS games. We face 5 that finished in the top 25. We face AFA in addition to that, and they are hovering around the top 25. I don't care who you are. There's no more difficult schedule next year then that.

Everyone knows we're a better team than last year, but the results may be more difficult to get. Wyoming fans would be delighted to finish 7-5 with our schedule and youth. We would be happy with 6-6.

Anyways, I'm stoked to visit the home of the horns.

Junky, you're sure a "glass is half full" kind of guy. I think I'm more cautiously optimistic about our players. :)

We have a lot of youngsters that are contributing. It's obvious the recruiting has really picked up. We had 12 freshmen contribute last year, and others that redshirted that will contribute this year. Look for big things out of Todd Knight, Devyn Harris, Oliver Shober, Nehemie Konkolongo, TJ Smith, and a couple of young o linemen.

I think we'll stomp Southern Utah.

We get Boise, AFA, and Utah at home this year. I'm thinking we'll get one of them, maybe two.

We get SDSU and CSU at home this year. I like our chances in those games. We've got UNLV and UNM on the road. A well coached team should win those games if last year is any indication. All four of those games end the season: a season with no bye weeks. If we're beat up by the end of the year we might struggle. If we're healthy, we could put some momentum together going into bowl season.

It's definitely a test, but our team will be better in the long run for challenging themselves.

What up guys. One of your fellow Pokes posted on our board that yall sold out your allotment for the game. So congrats on that. Although 2,000 wont seem like much in the stadium, and I actually thought we gave more than that. But I guess for OOC games both teams reach an agreement, so maybe that's your AD asked for?

Hope you guys are as ready for some football as I am!

Yeah probably true. I figured though with the size of our stadium it would be larger. I'm sure there will be more Cowboys than that in there anyways. I know there is a good size Wyo Alumni base around Texas. I see a few decals every now and then.

Sucks?

Remember our 2000 season, first with Vic Keonning as HC? At the time, it was the WORST season ever for Wyoming football. Same year, OU goes undefeated and wins it's FIRST National Championship in about 15 years!!! At least!!!!!!
