Who replaces Burman? Sawful?

With this season being a lost cause (it is...really), who replaces Burman and Sawful?

I hope we go find an AD that understands leverage and competitiveness in the modern era. No Bohl. No one from anywhere in our AD.

As for FB HC, my list might include a guy like Mark Stoops, Mike Shanahan (or anyone from Cignetti's staff), Shane Beamer if USC cuts him loose?
I hardly think that the season is over, but the question you pose is real. IF Sawvel can’t turn a corner by mid season, he’ll be gone. Who on this staff do you promote within as interim? Who on the staff would want that? It’s not a great position for that person, and makes for a miserable stretch of games- maybe. As for AD, nothing will happen during the football season. I do think by the end of basketball, he’ll either resign or be let go. And hopefully a search committee is formed and we take our time. Football, anything less than 7 wins should be an automatic out. But a lot of that will hinge on how they lose.
Personally, I’m hoping the team rebounds and they win. Let Sawvel have success, then get an offer as a DC at a P4. 🤞End on a high note and be an attractive place for a new up and comer.

CSU was the only game on this terrible schedule that mattered and we got torched. So what if we win against UNC, Northern Illinois and Central Michigan? We aren’t beating anyone else. It’s like watching a horror film where you know Michael Meyers is hiding in the closet and some no name actor is wandering aimlessly through the house. You know he’s a goner. Harsh? Yep. I hope I’m wrong. But I’m not. This season is a lost cause. We are terrible and useless wins against CMU and UNC are opium. They are mirages in a dry desert.

I am old enough to remember Dennis Erickson leaving in the middle of the night and Paul Roach who was retired from coaching stepping up saying it would be his last coaching job. If Kelly can keep the same promise and have the same success I'd say fine, but his past track record is of an opportunist.

It makes no sense to get rid of Sawvel with a lame duck AD still at the helm. Burman has to go first.

Burman isn't going anywhere on his own volition until the summer of 2027 when his contract ends. Unless President Reeves and the BoT send him packing early in which case they would still owe him the remaining salary on his contract. Assuming this also means Sawvel is fired, he would be owed $2.5 million on the remainder of the guaranteed contract Burman gave him. Then we would also need to pay more than we currently do to get a new AD and football coach that are better than what we have now. If the new AD and football coach are smart, they will demand we increase our NIL budget for football so that they can be competitive.

Where is all this extra money coming from?

Exactly.

Sawvel and staff will be here for the 2027 season. I foresee an ‘interim’ coach named sometime next year (maybe after the first game).

Reluctantly I agree. If Burman is not let go early , his tenure will end mid-2027. Hiring a new AD and the lack of resources for immediate buyout will mean Sawvel at least starts the 2027 season as coach. Another factor is the hiring cycle for new HCs usually starts at the end of season and lasts till mid-February. That does not mean I do not wish we could get rid of both yesterday, just that we are likely going to have tough out at least another 2 seasons.

Agree that it is not ideal and requires us to sit through basically 2 more lost seasons before having real hope. It is just the reality of the situation without some big donor(s) showing up with multi-million dollar checks to cover the buyouts. And even then, Burman has such a long history/relationship with so many of the current trustees that they are not going to let him leave by 'firing' and will demand this be cast as a 'retirement.' The AD contract ending June 2027 is what gets the parties there.
