When it's time to upgrade the West side of War Memorial, what do we do?

I totally agree with CarbonPoke that the dorms should be priority number one on the academic side of the march for great facilities. I know Corbett Pool is next for athletics facilities. After Corbett is done, the west side of War Memorial is the next big athletics project.

The Field House is in the way of the west side of War Memorial. We can't add a new press box or luxury boxes without removing the Field House. We can definitely get people in it to do a half assed job of rebuilding bathrooms and concessions on what is already there. We can't build a new structure to open up revenue streams without tearing down the Field House.

Should we:

A. Just renovate the west side of the War.

B. Tear down the field house and the current press box, build a new structure with luxury boxes, club seating, new revenue streams, and a new facility to replace the Field House?

To me, plan A is probably what is going to happen. It's a lot less expensive and a lot less work. I think plan B is what should happen. We could use more revenue streams, and honestly, we could use a new facility to replace the Field House. A 3000 seat arena available for indoor track and field, the volleyball team, and the wrestling team would really improve the atmosphere for those teams and help them grow. In addition, having two arenas to play in, would allow us to host basketball tournaments regularly with two courts to play on simultaneously.

I'm expecting us to take the easy way out and do some half-assed renovation of the west side of War Memorial.

That said, it isn't as bad as AFA - those restrooms make you feel like you are pissing on the floor at a really nasty gas station. I've been in a number of MLB and NFL stadiums, and some of the bigger NCAA stadiums. And you'd never hear "Buddy, you need to get an antibiotic prescription right away" at one of those places. The troughs are a public hygiene service.

I've thought about this a bit.What I think they could do is rip out the Birelli press box - then do something similar to what they did with the wildcatters - except go up. Put in some hefty support beams, put in the pressbox, then on top of that, build in some more luxury suites.

Hopefully, it wouldn't shrink the seating capacity of the stadium at all. I don't see any reason why they couldn't design the thing to be able to go up 3 or 4 levels either.

That's exactly what I was thinking: build up.

You could build a multi level structure similar to the Wildcatter Suites, only taller. I would push the edges of the structure all the way to the edges of the stadium so it makes as big of a wind break as possible for the field and the east side of War Memorial. I would make the first level of the new structure very similar to the Wildcatter: coorporate suites and a restaurant/bar. The next few levels you could make into smaller private boxes. I would make them for groups of 2-6(family sized) with windows you can open and close. You could do as many levels of those as their is demand to fill. On top of it all would be the level dedicated for the press.

You would still have to tear down the Field House to build that. You can't get to the stadium to set the beams/pour concrete with the Field House there.

That wouldn't be a problem. You could make the new War structure part of the east side of the new Field House. It could all be attached in one big facility. The east wall of the new field house would be the backside of the new luxury box structure.

We're starting to run out of new revenue streams. The University needs to open up as many revenue streams as possible to max out our budget. Simply renovating the current press box won't do that. We need to think out of the box. If that requires a bigger investment up front, then we should take our time and do it right. It would be a shame to see another phase 2 of the AA, where they cut corners because they're 4 million short.

I really think a modern field house facility designed specifically for indoor track and field, wrestling, and volleyball would be a massive advantage for all those programs. Having a larger arena for wrestling, volleyball, and a smaller arena for women's basketball would improve the atmosphere and the home court advantage for all three of those teams. If you did it with collapsable bleachers, similar to the AA, you could bring the seats up courtside for all three sports.

The new structure would include new locker rooms and office space for a bunch our sports. Wrestling, Volleyball, Track and Field, Cross Country, the A.D., Tennis, could all get new office spaces.

I think we need to go big on the west side of the War. It should be the crown jewel of our new athletics facilities.

When they built the Wildcatter they preferred to do the work on the West side so they could replace the press box. When they studied it, they realized they couldn't build a new structure without removing the field house. That's why they built on the east side. At least, that's how I understood it.

Well, in theory, you could tear down part of the west stands to do this. Say knock down the upper deck after the season is over, build up the new building, hell even make it part of the field house, then connect the stadium back to it.

A new field house would be awesome. But if we are looking strictly on budget - do what you can to go vertical on that side of the stadium.

We can still schedule CSU. I guess I may be the odd man out, I would say goodbye to UNM, UNLV, UNR, etc. in a second to move to the B12.... Stay with trash teams and a smaller pot of money or move to better teams, better recruits, more money...... To me its not even a thought. If the B12 ever comes knocking, we'd be dumb to not answer the door.
