getting run off in the offseason?
I haven't posted much this season, and to be honest I didn't watch every game like past years. Partly because of family/work obligations, and partly because I just couldn't stand to watch it. Bottom line though, I'm not happy with the results, and I think it all goes back to the coaching staff. Injuries be damned, if Waddell and Muojeke were healthy, we would have only lost by less. I doubt we would have won many more games. I don't believe Schroyer is the right guy for Wyoming, but it's pretty obvious that we're stuck with him for at least another year, maybe two.
So, the question remains, how much turnover will we see in the offseason? And how much of it will be good for the team? Personally, I'm beginning to believe Sylla is a waste of a scholarship. That scholly should go to a recruit - transfer, Juco, freshman, I don't care - that can actually give us quality minutes. Preferably a "big," but I'd rather have a guy that can shoot the lights out. Yeah, Sylla is 7 foot tall, but he can't catch a ball, can't shoot the ball, seems to have no competitive drive, and can't seem to stay healthy.
I'm willing to give a pass on the other guys - Mbaye, Bouedo, Thiam, Harrison are all guys that have some skill and with the right coaching and some hard work can be decent role players. Jackson is obviously our go-to-guy next season along with Muojeke if he's healthy. Waddell isn't the greatest player, but he works hard and leaves it all out there - and I'll take that. Luster is a decent point guard, but can't be relied upon to drive - into guys that are a foot taller - and create shots. If he stays within his role, he'll be ok. Again, with the right coaching, these guys could be an ok core to work with.
Recruits seem pretty good as well. I'll give Schroyer a pass for going the Juco route. He realizes his seat is hot and he needs to fill some holes NOW. Hudson, Cruz, and Martinez all seem to be shooters who can play at the wing well and create - AND MAKE - a shot. Gibson gives us a fairly big body that seems to be able to shoot as well. Will they pan out? We'll see - but they look like the right guys on paper.
I guess my point in all of this is it seems like Schroyer has the right pieces in place to be much better next year. The big question is can he coach them up and get these kids playing together, or do we suffer through another year of street-ball and end up last in the league again? We've already seen one assistant jump ship, which IMO is a big deal. Vandiver has a daughter playing at UW and two more kids in high school. Was it a "good career move" or does he see the writing on the wall already?
What do you all think? And thanks for letting me get out a mid-week rant
