What's in it for Wyoming

I'm trying to ask a serious question here and not start a shouting match. It's not my intent to tick people off, I'm just looking for answers and viewpoints.

What is Wyoming gaining by being in FBS? Given the current bowl system and the BCS, there's no realistic shot that Wyoming will ever be contending for a national title (unless MWC becomes AQ and Wyo really really turns their program around). I understand that UW will end up going to a bowl game every several years or so, but really no seems to care about the lower bowl games (it may be fun to travel to places like Vegas in December though, not arguing that). It seems the BCS is rewarding mediocrity with .500 teams getting into the "post-season". I'm sure Wyoming could be a dominate team at the FCS level and a periennal playoff contender with chances to compete for a national championship.

Currently I'm sure that UW is probably making more money at the FBS level than they would be at the FCS level, but it is worth it? That's my question. Not trying to tick people off; would just like to hear some opinions on this.

P.S. Don't think I'm just singling out Wyoming here. There are many other schools that I think are in the same situation, I'm just happening to post this here because I don't care about any FBS schools besides UW, Boise, and Notre Dame :D

What did you think of the Montana State v. Chadron State game a few years back? I enjoyed watching Danny Woodhead run over MSU all day. I actually thought Montana State would show up, but I was wrong.

Realistically, there's only 15-20 teams that are capable of bulldozing their way through the clusterfuck that is the BCS and winning a title. Even for a lot of BCS teams it's just not in the books for them to win, or get a shot at a BCS championship. As we're going to see this year, it's not even real likely for Boise or TCU who's already ranked way high. I would say 80-100 teams are in FBS solely for the purpose of money and winning bowl games. There's no money, prestige, etc by playing in the FCS.

If we were to do what Boise st has done, that is dominate for a few years, we to could have a shot at the BCS NC. So it CAN be done.

I wouldn't say it "can" be done yet. Boise still has to get there. If they do this year, then I agree. I hope they do, but they have to get through all the politics of the BCS

Agreed for the most part. The BCS is a fifedom, and anyone not a top team from a AQ conference is a feudal serf. The money and exposure is definatly lacking for the vast majority of FCS, however there is the opportunity for more than two teams to compete for a true national championship.

As titleist stated most teams don't really have a shot at the NC. For most college teams it's about challenging for you conference title, playing a bowl game, being on TV, beating a ranked team, winning your rivalry game. If it's only about being number one regardless of the competition level, why not skip FCS and go direct to Division 2? I think Wyo would be better than even money to win the FCS NC every year with the quality of the team right now. But as an FCS school suddenly the scholarships drop as does the revenue and unfortunately the interest from the fan base. As an example, Villanova is the present FCS NC. In their home playoff games last year they averaged less than 4,000 fans. Yet their basketball team which plays at the highest level sells out every game. So, although I too believe that Wyo would have more success at a lower level I think the program, from overall quality to the fan base expectations, is beyond that.

By the way, I'm happy with any bowl game!

From 1949 to about 1968 we were basically doing what Boise is doing now. Who knows how high Wyoming would have climbed if not for a certain incident that can be related to BYnerU.

I was curious Titleist. I walked by a guy at the tailgate sporting a hat and a shirt that said Titleist on it. Thought it might have been you.

Old bearded dude with a green hat? Ive seen him at all three games this year

I'm not usually so obvious as to wear a Titleist hat, though that would be kind of ironic. I haven't been to a game since Texas last year. You guys will know when I'm in Laramie next. :)

MSU hunter here is an interesting read from the Montana AD

It should answer your question. Frankly I think the FCS as you know it is going to be short lived and something we want to avoid at all costs.

I don't get all the conference realignment stuff.

Did the recession hit the schools across the nation so hard that they went from "hey we have money" to "we need to go to a different conference to get more money?"

The Griz thread - the griz have been self supporting for a long time. Sounds like they have a legitimate fear of not being able to fully fund their program like they have for 100 years. What changed?

All of these conferences are money hungry. I don't recall hearing about colleges complaining for money outside of the normal "oh we need more money" 3 or 4 years ago.

Whats next? Start throwing games to ensure a certain couple of teams make a bowl because they will draw a big crowd and can generate more revenue?

Or do we go to super conferences, or does everyone go independent?
