What should I expect from Weber St?

Having saw Weber play first hand last year once, and on TV once, they are a very offensive minded football team. Throw first. Their QB Higgins threw for 4000+ yards. They had a receiver, Etuati, who was very fast and very good, but I believe he graduated. They have a WR Toone who is also good. They have a running back, Trevyn Smith (who I think was 1st team All-Big Sky, along w/ Higgins) who isn't big, be he runs like a load. Very powerful runner, deceptively fast. Their offense was one of the top FCS offenses last year. Their defense was okay last year, I don't remember them being spectacular or anything, they lost a ton of talent on the D side of the ball. I was impressed w/ Trevyn Smith, he might be an NFL caliber back. However, I see UW stopping the Weber rushing attack and forcing them to the air.. and Weber can be beaten if forced to the air, as long as we can keep the coverage tight. Putting pressure on Higgins makes him very vulnerable to mistakes, as I witnessed last year in Missoula.

Its hard to compare an FCS to an FBS but looking at last yr's Hawaii and Utah game may be of a little help in what you could possibly expect but even then this should be a different team than that team. New Defense. Still good offense but the loss of full back that is now on the Eagles will be hard to replace.

Tim Toone (out best receiver this yr) & Trevyn Smith (our best running back) didn't play the whole game due to injuries.

Obviously the caliber of team Utah was last year WSU was never going to win the game even though a few scores at the end made the score seem closer.

I think the Hawaii game is kind of what I'm hoping the Wyo game is like. Scoring on both sides and WSU having a chance.

WSU's top offensive players:

Cameron Higgins, WSU QB
Finished 5th in Walter Payton Award (Offensive player of the year in I-AA)

Higgins started every game at QB for the Weber State as a redshirt sophomore and threw for 4,460 and 36 touchdowns, setting school records in both categories. He completed 66% of his passes and threw just 13 interceptions. For his efforts, he was named a Sports Network third team All-American. In a 17-10 win over Northern Colorado, Higgins threw for a season-high 413 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw at least four touchdowns five times during the 2008 season. Higgins finished the campaign ranked third nationally in passing efficiency and fourth in total offense. He also set school records with 4,383 of total offense and 38 combined touchdowns. For his career, Higgins has thrown for 6,419 yards and 53 touchdowns. Higgins was a Payton Award Finalist last season, finishing sixth. Higgins became a starter in the fourth game of the 2007 season and proceeded to pass for 1,959 yards and 17 TDs. He completed 56% of his passes and threw just nine interceptions.

Trevyn Smith, WSU RB

Smith will try to be one of only a handful of running backs in FCS history to rush for 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons. The redshirt senior had 1,129 yards as a freshman and 1,310 yards as a sophomore before piling up 1,585 yards last season. Smith also rushed for 21 touchdowns and grabbed 62 receptions for 778 yards and seven more TDs to earn Sports Network second-team All-American honors. He picked up first-team All-Big Sky honors after leading the league in rushing for the third straight season. He was the first player to lead the Big Sky in rushing in three consecutive seasons since Idaho's Sherriden May in 1992-94. He rushed for a season-high 171 yards and three rushing TDs against Eastern Washington while also catching six passes for 60 yards and another score. In 2007, he gained a career-high 225 yards in a 73-68 shootout win over Portland State. At Weber State, Smith has 4,024 yards rushing, good for first among active FCS running backs, and 45 TDs.

OGDEN, UTAH (July 22, 2009) – Four players were unanimous selections to the 2009 Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team, which was released Wednesday.

The team was picked by select media and sports information directors.
Weber State senior running back Trevyn Smith, looking to become the first player in league history to lead the conference in rushing four straight seasons, was one of three unanimous offensive selections. The others were Portland State senior fullback Bobby McClintock and Weber State center Kyle Mutcher. Weber State senior cornerback Josh Morris was the lone unanimous defensive selection.
Ten of the 27 players on the 29-player team were first-team All-Conference selections in 2008. That list is led by Smith, Mutcher, Morris and reigning league offensive MVP Cameron Higgins, wide receiver Tim Toone, defensive end Kevin Linehan, and safety Beau Hadley all of Weber State.
Other All-Conference performers in 2008 include Montana wide receiver Marc Mariani, who made the squad as a wide receiver and return specialist, and Montana State safety Kevin Retoriano.

Smith was joined in the backfield by Montana junior Chase Reynolds, who rushed for 1,573 yards and 22 touchdowns, helping the Grizzlies to the 2008 national championship game, and Portland State senior fullback Bobby McClintock. McClintock missed the 2007 season with an injury, but returned last season to rush for 457 yards and six touchdowns, and catch 34 passes.
Eastern Washington senior Aaron Boyce joined Toone and Mariani at wide receiver. Toone caught 84 passes for a single-season conference record 1,525 yards last season. Mariani caught 69 passes for 1,308 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also averaged 16.2 yards per punt return with two touchdowns. Boyce, an All-American in 2007, caught 63 passes and 10 TDs in 2008.
Weber State senior Cody Nakamura was selected as the tight end. Nakamura caught 48 passes for 729 yards with a team-high 10 touchdown catches in 2008.
Mutcher was one of two Wildcats named to the offensive line. He’s joined by teammate J.C. Oram, a sophomore, at guard. Montana State senior preseason All-American Jeff Hansen is the other guard. Montana senior Levi Horn and Eastern Washington senior Chris Thomas were selected at the tackle spots.
Montana State sophomore Jason Cunningham was tabbed as the kicker. Cunningham made 13-of-19 field goals and 38-of-39 extra points as a true freshman.
Montana State senior Dane Fletcher, a candidate for the Buck Buchanan Award, was selected as a defensive end along with Linehan. Fletcher, of Bozeman, Mont., tallied 6.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss last season, while Linehan had 10.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss.

No we should never expect a good game with an FCS team. If we want to compete in the MWC, we should expect that we could handle any FCS team.

However, we do realize where our team is at this year and know that Weber has a legitimate shot to beat us.

LOL at Michigan. :)

Great input, weberwildcat. Much appreciated. I hope your visit to Laramie is a safe and enjoyable one. Of course I'm hopin' our Pokes have a big win while working out their kinks but I also hope the game helps the Wildcats get ready for a big win in Fort Collins on the 12th.
