What if?

Total Hypothetical here....Perfect message board fluff.

Wyoming didn't lose a ton of players to the portal after last season...what if Craig had not retired? It would have been about the same team (minus Peasley) that won 9 games...Where would we be sitting right now?

I have to imagine we would have beaten Idaho...but I doubt we win either of those road games. BYU though?...I think CB could have beaten them at home....maybe that is just dreaming.

I know all of the games would have been a lot closer. We beat Idaho for sure. ASU is closer, as is UNT. BYU? I dunno. Discipline and playing within yourself can change an entire game - see TTU last season. No one panicked and everyone (on the team) believed. This year, the slightest hint of distress has led to disintegration. I think we are likely 2-3 with Bohl - maybe 3-2. The Idaho loss was a killer.

Chad and I had this discussion on the podcast a couple weeks ago.. Wins against Idaho and BYU, likely UNT.. ASU prob still would have been a loss.. they're a much better team than anyone expected.

Probably still get worked at ASU (P5 road games not Bohl's strong point). Probably beat Idaho on a last second score (all too frequent occurrence against FCS under Bohl). BYU still probably wins in Laramie (they have shown to be pretty good). UNT on the road, who knows but I do know Bohl teams struggled mightily on the road. Still handles bad Air Force. Give me 2-3 but would be feeling a lot better about the rest of the season.

Ever heard of Tyler Van Der Waal and the 2-6 start in 2018?

Bohl had to have some semblance of satisfactory QB play to win almost 80% of games against losing opponents since he was around 25% wins against winning opponents. Given exactly the same injuries and a new QB struggling to complete passes consistently I can only go with 2-3 for Bohl.

The loss to Idaho was unacceptable and I would not credit Bohl as an automatic winner with this exact same lineup running a constant A gap with passing on 3rd and long.

Bohl didn’t like to pursue the best QB. He put all his investment in Svoboda and his protégé is sticking to the status quo instead of pursuing a difference maker at the QB position. If this same staff couldn't recognize critical need areas where Bohl didn’t have proven difference making players on the roster after they took control and the portal opened, then I have concerns going forward that getting to .500 might be as frequent of an occurrence as under Joe Glenn.

In my opinion Anderson had the best credentials out of South Lake Carroll but the knee injury set him back. Will he ever get serious consideration? The other recruit Batiste could be the next Sean Chamber as he is another big player that managed 51% completions in HS.

My point is the majority of the roster is what Bohl built and I can’t say his replacement changed any recruiting tactic as we rarely saw Bohl pursue a proven difference maker out of the portal - Waylee is the best that comes to mind besides Peasley.

It’s not just the record. We weren’t remotely competitive with UNT, BYU and ASU. Bohl would have had the team prepared to play.

A loss is a loss and I can’t be convinced Bohl would do anything overly miraculous against these teams.

Bohl never beat teams like UNT on the road and this year the P5 games were against much more stout foes.

I do agree that perhaps the games may have been played a bit more competitively but I seriously doubt we would see wins @ASU, BYU and @UNT using the exact same players.

How soon do we forget when Bohl had ineffective QB play he couldn’t beat UNM as well as Fresno at home scoring a total of 3 points in both games combined.

We don’t have a damn offense and the skill to do much with it this year which is a typical Bohl cycle until he became convinced he needed to try something else.

Our only hope it appears is hope what we have develops quickly.
