Western State @ Wyo

Okay, Brett declared, now back to hoops!

New Years Day game! I'm stoked! Hope the team got rested up and will come out firing!

I don't think Western State has won any games this season, and they are D2, so this should be a total ass kicking.

Nance is likely to go off big time again, and Josh Adams should have a big game, as his brother will likely be guarding him.

Adams will probably be really excited to play against his brother. I hope he takes it too him!

I think the Pokes should win by 20+.
Hopefully it's not a close game for the first half. They need to come out and put them away fast to build some confidence going into MWC play.

I think seven of their ten opponents have scored 90 to well over 100. AFA even had 94. Most D2 schools were well over 100. I will consider this a major disappointment if we do not hit 90 or above. I will be even more disappointed if they make it a game like Black Hills St. did. If most remember we were trading baskets with them clear up to five minutes remaining. We will probably see more Granberry, Hankerson and Washington as well.

I doubt we score 90. We are one of the slowest tempo teams in the country (342 out of 351). We shot 70% from the field and only scored 72 against UNC (our TO and REB problems played a role too obviously).

I just want to see crisp execution and effort. Something in the 80-50 range would be great.

Well if D2 teams are putting up those type of numbers, Wyo should too. Adams and the other guards should be FLYING all over the court. I expect some big time dunks. Hopefully it is a total fucking blowout.
If we don't blow these guys out, I will be REALLY disappointed.

If the Pokes don't score 100, something is very wrong and Shyatt should address it right away. On the other hand, why the hell is Wyoming scheduling teams like this? What good does it do for the team development? They could probably get a better workout just chosing up sides among themselves and having a scrimmage. I hate games like this and wouldn't even bother to watch it if it were on TV.

I think Shyatt originally had them scheduled at the beginning of the year but it got changed.
But I think he wants Western State on the schedule because Josh Adams brother plays for them.

We've scheduled Western st practically every year. The excuse is it is regional.

So we basically fund half of their athletic department every year for a D2 win? :?

I expect a blowout as well. I just expect something in the 70-40 to 80-50 range instead of 100-60.

We are the better team, we should dictate tempo. Our tempo is slow. Guarantee you that Shyatt would be happier to hold them under 50 than he would to have us score 100.

Guess how many times we have scored 90 under Shyatt... Zero.

Most MWC teams schedule these kind of games. I would rather play regional RMAC schools than a school like St Katherine's like Utah or SDSU ( or the Schroyer specials like Johnson and Wales or Peru State).

Still, wish we could limit them to one per year instead of two.

Might aswell play Barclay College. My alma mater. It's NCCAA D 2. Sounds like it's right up our alley. It's western St. And if other D 2 schools and "AFA" can score 94 and above, we better. Or we have issues. Plus Shyatt wanted to run when we could.

Western State is probably about that bad, even though they are NCAA D2.

In terms of scoring a certain amount, that just doesn't make sense. You know who else AFA scored 94 on? South Dakota. We averaged 65 ppg against USD in regulation. However, USD scored 86 on AFA and only 56 avg on us. Different tempo, plus we are a better defensive team than we are offense, while AFA is the other way around. They also gave up over 80 to CU and Jackson St (both losses), while those teams only reached the 60's against us.

We should dominate Western State, but a team is not necessarily better just by playing at a higher tempo. 70-40, like what SDSU did to Southern Utah recently is just as dominant as a 100-65 type track meet.

In terms of Shyatt's comments, I will say what I said in the offseason: Shyatt has coached 3 seasons at UW (3.5 now) and in each one we were one of the slowest teams in the nation. Why would we expect that to dramatically change?

To add to my offseason comments, now that I have seen this team play, we are a half court roster. Other than Adams and Nance, I don't see anybody that can really excel in a full court game and Nance is probably better in the half court with a variety of moves on the locks and quick flashes to get the ball going to the rim. He just has the skill set to run the court and finish. Adams is the only player that I see as actually being more of a transition type player than he is a half court guy.

Some items that I am looking for in the game:

1. Grabau to the line- Riley has a total of 2 FT Attempts in the last 5 games despite playing 37+ min in each game. We simply cannot generate enough offense if our starting PG is such a non-threat off the dribble drive. This stat would be bad enough in a normal year, but under the new rules, it is quite surprising. I don't expect him to turn into Brandon Ewing over night, but he needs to at least challenge the defense with the drive.

2. Hankerson, where are you?- these are his stats over the last 4 games: 1-5 FG, 3-8 FT, 2 Reb, 9 fouls. Ugh. We need a lot more from Junior.

3. Let it fly Jerron- self explanatory. Very good shooter that needs to take it every time he is open. I have never seen a quality shooter turn down more open looks.

This game should be a 20 point+ walk through. The second half of the season really starts on Jan. 4 vs Nevada!

Black Hills St. Should've been a walk through. That became a game...

100 point walk thru?

Whenever you guys start talking like that you can expect that we have to come from behind to pull a rabbit out our ass.

I think NoWherePoke hit the nail on the head here. I also would rather play a game against a regional D2 team than have another scrimmage or play a non-regional D2 team on the road.

I certainly run across more Black Hills State, USD and Chadron State grads within my family and in my day-to-day life than I meet Jackson State alumni. Therefore those games are more interesting to me than they are for those who simply view the Cowboys as a tool to bring the teams they really want to see to Laramie.
