Unfortunantly I left another game at the War saying to myself, "well at least we won."
The first 3 quarters of the game we seemed to do well, certaintly better then last year. The defense only had one bad series where they gave up the two huge pass plays for a Weber touchdown, but otherwise played tough. The offense moved the ball pretty well up and down the field. They shot themselves in the foot a couple times but certaintly looked better then last year. My biggest complaint with the offense was the play calling in the redzone. We can't just try to run the ball 3 times in the redzone, we have to mix it up some, It looked like Glenn era playcalling everytime in the redzone. The special teams were hit and miss. I thought the kickers did pretty good except for the missed extra point, but the special teams coverage was terrible. I found myself holding my breath everytime again hoping Weber wouldn't return one for a td.
Then came the 4th quarter. I don't think I could have been more dissapointed in the last quareter of the game. I believe we went into it up 26-7 and barely won 29-22. The defense look like they had finished the game with 10 minutes still left. Up till when the clock read 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter our defense was dominating. But then suddently our defense looked winded, sluggish, and weber moved the ball at will. They were realing off 10 and 20 yard runs, and throwing to WIDE open recievers for the rest of the game. The offense likewise went to pretty much all run, and had 3 and outs and only one more field goal. If the team improves on anything from week 1 to week 2 it needs to be playing till the end of the game and not cashing in because they feel they are far enough ahead. If weber state had recovered the fumbled onside kick we may have been looking at an overtime game.
It's most dissapointing to me because I was feeling pretty good about our team through 3 quarters, but the 4th quarter reminded me so much of last year, and I had to leave another game thinking we were lucky to win, and wondering if our lackluster end of game effort is a sign of losses to come.
