Well at least we won

Unfortunantly I left another game at the War saying to myself, "well at least we won."

The first 3 quarters of the game we seemed to do well, certaintly better then last year. The defense only had one bad series where they gave up the two huge pass plays for a Weber touchdown, but otherwise played tough. The offense moved the ball pretty well up and down the field. They shot themselves in the foot a couple times but certaintly looked better then last year. My biggest complaint with the offense was the play calling in the redzone. We can't just try to run the ball 3 times in the redzone, we have to mix it up some, It looked like Glenn era playcalling everytime in the redzone. The special teams were hit and miss. I thought the kickers did pretty good except for the missed extra point, but the special teams coverage was terrible. I found myself holding my breath everytime again hoping Weber wouldn't return one for a td.

Then came the 4th quarter. I don't think I could have been more dissapointed in the last quareter of the game. I believe we went into it up 26-7 and barely won 29-22. The defense look like they had finished the game with 10 minutes still left. Up till when the clock read 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter our defense was dominating. But then suddently our defense looked winded, sluggish, and weber moved the ball at will. They were realing off 10 and 20 yard runs, and throwing to WIDE open recievers for the rest of the game. The offense likewise went to pretty much all run, and had 3 and outs and only one more field goal. If the team improves on anything from week 1 to week 2 it needs to be playing till the end of the game and not cashing in because they feel they are far enough ahead. If weber state had recovered the fumbled onside kick we may have been looking at an overtime game.

It's most dissapointing to me because I was feeling pretty good about our team through 3 quarters, but the 4th quarter reminded me so much of last year, and I had to leave another game thinking we were lucky to win, and wondering if our lackluster end of game effort is a sign of losses to come.

So much for that BYU won.

I highly doubt we see a bigger upset then that game. Huge break for the Cougs when Bradford went out.

Does OU even have a shot at the BCS now?

Good report WyomingAg. I understand your feelings and agree. This will be a learning year but I think we'll be a lot more competitive than in recent years. We definitely have a bunch of tough teams on the schedule though. We'll grow with each game this year and then another recruiting class will position us that much better.

It was definitely a big break for BYU BUT, they outplayed OU in the first half with Bradford in there. That fumble on the 1 yd. line was a killer but they came back strong. Very impressive.

I think we looked fairly good myself. I believe that we were doing a lot of things this game that we would never have done against a non FCS team. The QB carousel proves that the coaching staff doesn't know which QB they want to go with yet, and Marcell Gipson in the backfield was just a bad idea.

Offensively we are ten times better than we were last year. I was surprised to see us run the ball as much as we did, but it worked out very well. I feel like ACS was the better QB. He seemed to have much better pocket presence, and his accuracy is much better than Benjamin's. Alvester Alexander was also impressive. His patience was key in the big runs that he picked up, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting before the year is over. Our WRs had some problems getting separation, but they caught the ball very well. Also keep in mind that we were without our top 2 WRs this game.

The defense is another story. I thought we looked worse on that side of the ball. The secondary looked very sloppy, which is going to kill us next weekend. The D line also had some serious problems getting pressure on the QB. Weber did a good job of finding the soft spots in our zone coverage. Shamiel Gary was a huge bright spot in the secondary. I honestly didn't know he was on the team until a few weeks ago, but I think he proved that he belongs today.

All in all I feel very good about the team this year. I hope that some of the things we were doing we did just to test the waters. I also feel like we really didn't open the playbook too much, so we should see a lot of new things next weekend.

The biggest problem I saw with the Pokes today was we couldn't consistently get pressure on their QB. If we don't improve that this week, can you imagine what Colt McCoy will do next week? I think I was a little too confident in our defense when I predicted our defense would only give up 21 points or more 3 times this season.
The positives were the turnover margin, our QBs who had never taken a snap in D1 football, our two RBs who were close to 100 yds each, and our freshman FS (Gary) - he is going to be a monster.
We are going to get better as this season goes on.

I'd say the worst part of today other than some poor secondary play was our O-line. They played absolutely piss poor... Football is a game where you can't stand around and not be blocking someone, especially as an offensive lineman. Why do you think ACS was running for his life almost every play? Many times I saw our tackles just let the end go right by without much effort... Maybe that's part of our blocking scheme, and if that's the case, it sucks.

If possible I agree with everything WyomingAg, J-Rod, WYO1016, and WYCowboy wrote.

And Cornpoke, while I didn't notice it this game I certainly did last year.

The score isn't indicative of the game IMO. The offense just failed to convert on a few drives where we should have definitely had points. Unlike last year, the offense actually moved the ball. And who would have thought we would have such a running game?

Yea its Weber State and yea they are FCS. But as was said at least we won. There were several FBS teams to go down to FCS this weekend. Most notable Virginia losing to William and Mary!!
