Week 1 Spreads

Hate to be the first to pull off my brown & gold glasses here...

NIU would have beaten us by 49+ last year. They had speed on offense (and still do), and we had the ever-complimenting holes on defense (and still do).

We are not going to win any games this year, that we have to be the first to score 49. And I can easily see NIU putting up 49 on 9/3/16.

I hope I am wrong, and will be the first person here to express my shock and shame, should Wyoming pull out a win, or even pull out a moral victory by not giving up more than 7 scores.

Maybe with a Christensen led offense that took less than a minute off the clock with a 3 and out, but I think we'll hold on to the ball enough this year to keep opponents possessions limited. I agree with you that I don't see our defense stopping drives before they get into the end zone, but I just think we may be able to work the clock in a way to give us a chance to keep it close. Then if we limit turnovers and find a decent field goal kicker we may have a shot to win a few more games compared to last year

It all depends on whether the offense with Allen can click enough to keep up. Hill will get yards I'm sure but that's different than scoring. We need a viable and dangerous passing game to score off the ground game

If NIU blows us out at home, we won't win over 3 games this year.

No offense to NIU but it isn't like they were some G5 juggernaut last year. We were terrible and the were a decent G5 team. It isn't like we are opening against BSU or Houston.

If we can't hang with decent G5 teams at home after 3 years of a developmental staff, it will be a really bad sign.

Hey wyonation! Its WeAreHuskies and I also come in peace.
Its easy to look at the Boise game and think that NIU is a terrible team, but its more complicated than that. NIU had a strange 2015, through 2 games we believed that the offense would be electric and the defense would be awful but then at #1 Ohio State, the NIU defense only gave up 1 offensive touchdown and forced Urban Meyer to put in JT Barrett after Cardale Jones after threw 2 picks early on. After that, the defense shined and the offense stunk in a loss at Boston College and everyone was bad in a loss at Central Michigan. The NIU started to shine on both ends down the stretch, and Drew Hare returned to his 2014 self in a string of wins. Then at undefeated Toledo, Hare went down with a season ending injury, but our backup Ryan Graham somehow brought us a win. Graham looked good for a couple more wins until getting injured in a loss vs Ohio. In the MAC Championship, we were lead by Tommy Fiedler (4th stringer) in that loss. Graham came back for the Boise game, but we were overall dinged up and pretty beaten down by the season, and lost in a blowout where Graham played terrible. Hare, a very good QB himself, is back and looks great despite worries that he would miss the start of the season. While a couple of pieces are gone, the offense still has a strong core of running backs lead by Joel Bouagnon and Jordan Huff plus Kenny Golladay (break out reciever, very tall, great hands) The defense returns major weapons, including Shawun Lurry (the leader in interception in all of FBS for 2015) and a couple others. Our coach, Rod Carey, is basically coaching for his job this year after some good regular seasons and bad postseasons and we essentially fired our bad OC Bob Cole but lost our good DC to Rutgers. While knowing some of NIU's tendencies tells me that this will end up being a close game, the 10 point line seems fair. (also, I actually started the topic page for the Big 12 discussion, as a team leaving the AAC could open up a spot for NIU in the AAC, nobody actually believes we could even possibly get a Big 12 spot) I'll be attending the game myself and look forward to it, and hope the best for the Pokes for the rest of the season after game 1! Good luck!

That may very well be the single most important factor of the 2016 Wyoming Cowboys & the W/L column.

I think NIU would have put up (at minimum) 63 on our swiss cheese D.

Check this out, to refresh your memory (against possibly the worst team in FBS football):

Roback, Vann lead Eastern Michigan past Wyoming, 48-29

Brogan Roback passed for 330 yards and three touchdowns and Shaq Vann rushed for 129 yards and two scores to help Eastern Michigan beat Wyoming 48-29 on Saturday.

I actually agree with McPeachy. Far too many of you are using NIU's bowl game as the barometer for their success. Throwing out that game, they were a good team. I am downright shocked that we are only 10 point underdogs, I was expecting closer to 20-25 as the spread.

Depends on when we played them last year. Beginning of the year maybe. . Toward the end of the year we would have given them a good game at home.

Absolutely. If NIU was our first game of the year, last year, they would have beat the living shit out of us (IMO). Last game of the season (our season) it would have been closer.

I agree.....they could have hung a 49 point win if it was one of our first games. We sucked pretty bad earlier in the season.

ps. There was a post on the other board (tweet from Gags) saying Carl G is up to 243.

I saw that somewhere (not there). He did look bigger when I last saw him! The kid I am excited to see on the field is Van Emmerik. He is every bit of 275 - and all muscle!

Good news for the D line. Granderson maybe has NFL potential

Do we zone blitz ever? I bring this up because good D-linemen will occasionally get a pick when they drop back and I can't even remember a D-man getting a pic in a long time. If they had, it was probably a deflection
