When I hear crap like this I just think back to the Movie Road House.

It's just like that seriously remember when you were a little kid, sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? If there are people that feel like they are being verbally abused and that is reason for them to quit a Football team I'd prefer they quit now instead of wasting training on them.

Sure, some of these kids should toughen up...and on the other end, there are much more productive means of motivation than resorting to verbal abuse.

This is a very interesting topic. A meta-analysis of research in the area would seem to suggest that the "tear them down, then build them up" model is effective in the short-term but alarmingly destructive in the long-term. Take a look when you have some time. There is a good amount of well done research by respected institutions on this very topic and the findings are quite interesting.

While the "basic training" method is not great for long-term heuristic learning, it is very effective at creating cohesion, discipline, and voiding old habits to learn new. If basic lasts too long, it does indeed become destructive, but in the short run (say a 3 week spring practice schedule) it does exactly what it sets out to do - remove old habit, instill proper movements and responses, and bond the group together.

After this, there needs to be the next step: the players need to be taught to react on the fly and counter unknown situations. The goal is not to create a musket line of 18th century Prussians, but rather a cohesive unit that will play as a team.

As I said earlier, Bohl announced to the team that there would be people not able to hack it before Spring Practice started - that is exactly in the line of such basic training methods.

If the practices are closed, either Slow Hand is on the team, a manager for Dog, or he is getting the quote second hand. The people I spoke to who are at the practices seems to give a completely contradictory evaluation - brutal in reps, damn hard because of the standards, but the players leaving were "soft."

Words get conflated, changed, and twisted. Especially when someone feels hard done for. However, from my vantage point, the story doesn't ring wholly true.

I doubt that Bohl's crew is verbally abusing players. They are probably challenging them, but there is a difference.

The worst thing that Bohl could have been accused of in Fargo is allowing his team too much free reign with off the field issues. Even that may be attributed more to Gene Taylor, that school's athletic director, who seemed to let off the field actions of the players slide provided they win. I have been led to believe that Bohl wanted to crack down harder, and Taylor was the one who let some of these things slide.

Bohl is a disciplinarian. Exactly what Pokes football needs. I was sick to my stomach watching them give up against CSU last year. If somebody quits like that on Bohl's Wyoming team, I doubt they'll be on the field for the next game, and they'll probably be gone for good.

I had never seen so many people seething after a game at The War as I did after the CS-ewe game. A total embarrassment. I tuned ol' Slow Hand out when he said "player moral (morale?, morrill?) was in the shitter." Damn, those "ruthless" coaches! :thumbdown:

This REALLY sounds like some sour grapes from some players that are not feeling the "love" that they experienced under the last staff and have been put on notice to step it up if they want to see the field. So what are they doing? Trashing the coaches and leaving.....this is the direct opposite of what a stand-up type of person would do. I am not saying that Rains and Madden are not stand-up types, but what I am saying is that their actions are supporting something that is the direct opposite than being a stand-up type.

What is Slow Hand doing? Starting rumors and supporting the disgruntled players positions totally and then trying to cover his backside by saying..."all I am doing is passing it on", and then adding words like "again" and "Hmmmm?" Slow Hand is NO friend of what Coach Bohl and the new coaching staff is trying to achieve, the type of stuff that he spreads can really do damage to people's careers and the program, but that doesn't seem to bother him....as he says, I am just repeating what I have heard. But the best part is that Slow Hand says that the behavior is "borderline" to abusive but then comes on and says, did I ever use the word "abusive?" I really have problem with people that come out and insinuate all sorts of horrible things going on and then tries cover his backside by saying, did I ever use "____" word. That is a game he is playing and frankly is a game that is nasty and underhanded. Vorel's blog says on the contrary, nothing that he has seen in practice is even close to that. You would think that if things are as bad as Slow Hand says that they are, i.e. - "other coaches going and bringing out what is happening" that something would have come out that Vorel or someone else would have seen and other players would have mentioned something. But none of that has happened. It truly sounds like the "weeding out" process has started and players that didn't want to stand with their teammates and help the program come to winning a championship have quit.

P.S. - I know Slow Hand your reaction will be that I am reading something into your posts. On the contrary, I have just read your posts added nothing into them and noticed what you didn't do and that was to support the coaching staff. I am not alone in this idea Slow Hand, on the contrary you are alone in your argument.

The Wyoming football program does not need people that are cancer types.

That is why the practice is closed as well as to eliminate any possible distractions. I get that it is the culture of a D1 program but it goes against everything he has portrayed up to this point. Honor, integrity, really? How can you make those claims and talk to young men in that fashion? It is counter productive.

I've been around several NCAA football programs from an "insider" view and one thing that is consistent across the board is this type of verbal "abuse"/coaching. There is always a coach or coaches that use this type of negative reinforcement on a consistent basis, even on Glenn's staff. This, as you said, is one of the reasons that most programs have closed practices. I don't know if you are stating your distaste for this type of action or if you were just trying to inform us, but either way this is something that goes on in most football programs in the country. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong, just that it does happen a lot more than most people realize.

+1. As the same kind of "insider" WWP was...I've heard some things and can second that Glenn's staff, one offensive coordinator in particular, was guilty as well. Coaches at this level and beyond aren't known for their kind demeanor.

Sounds like it may take a couple of years to get this problem area fixed.

This is my biggest worry with the new staff. Hopefully, they will have a better eye for talent and coaching ability for the O-line than our previous few coaching administrations. We just haven't been able to put together recruits to be dominant along the O-line.

With that said, I really like Bohl's apparent philosophy of building a team around the trenches. I agree 100% but just worried that it is much easier said than done.
