There are so many choices to put in this poll, unfortunately WyoNation only allows for 10 responses, or the list would likely grow to 25 or more. Sorry if I missed any of the most important ones!
 
For me, it’s either the Schroyer debacle or the Sawvel hire. I ended up voting for Schroyer, but if Sawvel has another crap year and they keep him around for another year, I would change my vote.

Schroyer actually had a lower winning percentage than Allen Edwards did. Pretty unbelievable given how bad Edwards was.

The basketball hiring (Schroyer, Shyatt, Edwards) until Linder. Linder was a good hire until the NIL deal and his dealings with the California recruiting. Sorry to the Shyatt fans but he was a 46% conference winner. Those are the games that energize the fan base not the Peru State and Johnson Wales games to get to 20 wins.
 
For me it was easily the Schroyer hire. It was the first of many bad decisions which snowballed into finding ourselves at the bottom of the conference in almost every category. I was done with the guy after the Schroyer debacle as it was obvious how clueless he was. And after 20 years I can still say the same about Burman, clueless. Some people grow into their job, but not him.
 
My vote is caveated. Hiring Sawvel and giving him a fully guaranteed contract with no prior head coaching experience and no known suitors was the worst.

Promoting Sawvel to head coach was at least a defensible decision at the time. But it should have been a prove it contract. Hamstringing the football program with the contract that was given to him was lunacy.

But overall, on Burman’s watch, Wyoming is headed to an absolute irrelevancy in an abomination of a conference.
 
My vote would be for all the above. I voted for the Sawful decision. Mainly, because it’s still fresh and hurting. Not looking forward to watching another year of ineptitude while Burman and Sawful rake in big time cash.
 
You would think with the money these people are making that when those salaries get released to the public he would take a look at what is going to be listed for all the positions especially his own, the head football coach and the head basketball coach. They are all making so much money that it needs to be right when it gets released. So when it came out that he hadn't looked at the financial information that indicated he was making $850k a year . . . it showed a certain amount of incompetence. Those numbers need to be right and as the head of department you need to be reviewing them BEFORE they get released to the public. Coming out after they are public and saying, "it's a misprint" is my personal favorite.

I believe that $850K number might be accurate. From various internet information, sounded like that included some deferred compensation. I.e earning the money this year for work performed this year but being paid later for tax purposes. Playing dumb and saying that’s not what my W2 shows for income this year makes it worse (if that is indeed the case). Regardless, his pay and his contract done in secret is absurd.

If that is the case then it only makes him look even more clueless. Most people in the "real world" are making $75k for a good salary, to be making $850k and not really even know it as the department head? Basically saying "I'm making so much money and we can't even really keep track of it" to the fan base.

It's comical watching the "rich kid" trying to be AD for this long.

Burman might not be a great AD, but the criticism of his pay just doesn't add up for me. His compensation is right in line, or even a little below average, for that position at a FBS level university.

The position carries significant responsibility and requires a major time commitment including travel that often results in a pretty good chunk of time spent away from family. As far as white collar/non-physical labor jobs go, it's not an easy one.

The criticism of his performance is definitely warranted, but at least in my opinion, his pay is about what I would expect it to be - I don't think its egregious in the least.

I knew exactly to the penny my gross and net income. I knew exactly how much I spent sending my kids to UW. I knew exactly how much I was donating to CJC and the cost of my season tickets. And in retirement I know exactly how much to withdraw from savings to avoid paying as many taxes as I can. To hear that someone pleads oblivious when they are responsible for an entity that deals in millions and multiple layers is the distasteful part of this.

I won’t complain about the amount Burman makes as much as I will the results.

The bottom line is none of the men’s major sports has competed for a conference championship with any consistency. I don’t count one season in football and a tournament win in basketball since 2006 as being anything that puts UW on a competitive map. More losing seasons than winning seasons. And hoops which was already heading into hibernation has been decimated severely.

Although I agree that his salary is in the proper percentile, I would continue to argue, based on the performance of his department - all the way around - he should be paying Wyoming, not the other way around. Reward for performance, and if performance isn't there, make a change. Period!

I agree that he has been given too many chances and his performance has not warranted him staying at UW as long as he has.

That mistake falls squarely on the BoT though. Their failure to make a change is the real problem. Tom Burman is just a symptom of it.
