Fantastic news! I'm guessing "involved somehow" means he's on the advisory committee, which is EXACTLY what we need. Tiller knows how to win, and he knows a good coach when he sees one.

Tiller has also been around long enough that he has connections with EVERYONE. Very useful in contacting individuals (under the radar) to gauge possible interest. Also useful to contact others for references/suggestions on candidates to get real info rather than the glorified BS that you find in a normal reference/letter of recommendation...in other words, they'll give it to him straight.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that the president of the university should stay in his lane. To be concerned about the overall direction of the football program and the athletic department as a whole, very much his job. To be bummed about a football loss, fine. We all were (but there were PLENTY of people around here, myself included, who were putting a very positive spin on the performance at Nebraska immediately after that game so people should be careful about casting stones). To be criticizing the performance of the players in a particular game, to be drawing conclusions about the coaching staff, etc. after one game - not his job. Just my take.

Nope, I'm saying overreacting to one game this specifically isn't the president's job. He's not a football guy. If you're not happy with the general direction of the program, fine. Nobody is. But I don't really think I want a football culture in Laramie where the president of the goddamned university is going to be up in everybody's grill after each loss. No coach will want to come here if that's how it is.

I don't agree. The initial email is to Boswell and Miller, cc'd to Burman, birddogging them about the consultant firm contract basically because he's pissed about the team's performance in the Nebraska game. He alludes to the "moral victory" attitude in that email, and I would agree that your characterization is more accurate regarding his follow-up email, but then there's this:

"What president wouldn't want to win his first game?" he asks, in the follow-up. "It would have set the tone for my presidency." I'm sorry, does the president of the university put on a jersey or a headset? Whether the football team wins one particular game or not has fuck-all to do with "the tone" of his presidency. It doesn't speak well of his management style to be addressing anyone like this.

None of this is to say that I disagree with anyone about the "culture of mediocrity" in UW with respect to athletics. It also isn't to say that I wouldn't have welcomed Sternberg's emphasis on changing that culture had he continued. My point is one about management style and his perception of his role within the university. It is possible for someone to have the right priorities but still be wrong in their approach to implementing them.

I just think it's bullshit that he made the football team's performance on that day somehow about his presidency. He didn't hire anyone involved, recruit anyone involved, call a play or play a down. It just makes him look like a self-centered asshole and a micromanager (and not the good kind).
