Vorel from CST

Well-known member
He is a good writer and blogger. I like Gags, but this guys is ten times better than any other Casper Tribune writer ever!

What do you guys think?

I think Vorel is an excellent, energetic writter who really does his job well. I was actually suprised at how well he covers the Cowboys. I thought ( like most people) that here we go with another writter just making a pit stop and going through the motions. I can tell he loves what hes doing. I love what he's doing. Keep up the good work Mike!

I have been very impressed with his coverage. CST has had plenty of other quality journalists cover the Pokes, but Frederickson was so bad, that the contrast between Vorel and him really stands out.

Gags is a punk hack writer. He is worse than a spoiled 3 year old kid if he doesn't get his way. Worst writer ever for Wyoming Sports. I figured Gags keeps his job because he has pictures of his boss with animals or children.

Vorel writes well. Hope he stays around for awhile. He writes like a sports writer should.

I actually talked to Vorel today after the Wyo practice, and told him that there are lots of people who really like what he is writing (thinking of comments from Wyonation and gowyogo people).
He told me that he is basically a just a big sports fan and his job is literally just covering Wyoming football and basketball so why not make the best of it?
He also said that he doesn't see the need to write bad things, but more good things, and human interest stories (Brett Smith and how West Salem is always going to be home to him, among other stories). Especially during the summer when not much is going, he likes to write stories that fans will think are interesting so they can be excited for the season.

He isn't that much older than me actually. He went to Mizzou, showed up for his freshman semester the year DC showed up in Laramie. Spent 4 years @ Mizzou, then took this job.

I very much doubt that he has reached his dream job in covering Wyo sports, so I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves for a better opportunity in a few years but he seems to be enjoying it here for now.

Mike asked me to go get a drink w him and talk sports, so hopefully take advantage of that one soon. He seems like a heck of a guy, wants to meet people, and he can write

Good stuff BP....

Vorel looks solid. To Frederickson's credit, he did a good job of reporting. His issue was the issue many people have with journalists: trying to make your mark. Positive news does not sell. Negative news does, and he tried to capitalize off of negative issues by keeping the alive for a long period. Plus he appeared to have an axe to grind with CDC. Technically, all of this is just journalism. Democracy doesn't work if we don't have negative nancy journalists who question everything. And maybe that's it.....the political approach of journalism should stay in politics and out of sports. Whatever your opinion....good luck to Frederickson.....and hello Vorel. This program could use a positive slant right now.

Vorel had done a terrific job so far.. guy is workin' hard. I really like Gagliardi, but it seems like the Boomerang/WTE have really been lacking Pokes coverage so far.. I keep thinking that the paper(s) are cutting staff/resources and that's a reasons we've seen less from them. The CST, biggest paper in the state, doesn't quite suffer like smaller papers do. Vorel is bangin' 'em out though. Good on him.

Vorel has been kicking ass since the day he got to Laramie. It's great to see all of the human interest pieces coming out of his laptop on the various UW teams.

and the fact that he is either camped out in Laramie, maybe a motel... but he hasnt packed up and headed back to the mothership in casper

last year we had a day one extravaganza of news... then nothing until the scrimmage. news in wyo had really dropped off since about 2008. glenn had better coverage than what we've been used too. now here's mike... and its freakin awesome!!

Pretty sure he lives in Laramie. the past several CST UW writers have lived in Laramie. Ben Fred and Schmoltz both did.

If his job is just covering UW football and basketball it would make sense for him to live in Laramie.

I also like the way Mike Vorel uses Vine for video clips. I usually go to most scrimmages and on occassion I catch a ppractice, but his coverage is almost like being there. This guy is incredible! Totally dig his writing style. Ben seemed ok but nothing compared to to Mike. He will have an impact on getting those people who are on the fence in regards to attending home games in the seats.

That and the wins will help!

I had been corresponding with Mike since I first noticed both his energy as well as his voluminous amount of POKES coverage since he joined the CST...today at media day I finally got a chance to meet and talk with him.

He really enjoys what he does and I think he gets a kick out of being the lone 'voice of the Pokes' in the CST, this after being one of a few writers who covered Mizzou's program for a couple of years.

Very nice guy, down to earth, and clearly he's been a breath of fresh air since he started covering the POKES not all that long ago.

We're fortunate as fans to have someone who has the passion for his job that Mike does -- it is certainly reflected in his work, and we're all the beneficiaries of that.
