Vorel article on Burman's reaction to the findings

I do agree that Burman has at times used the excuses that we already know are present as a way to justify not being the best we can be. That being said I do agree with some that he said, particularly about UW needing a lot more support from the state and legislature. The biggest issue I see is the severe lack of funding that we recieve athletically compared to the rest of the conference. I very much hope that this new president puts a lot of pressure on the state to increase the amount of money they give to the university and in particular the athletics department. We need to drastically increase our funding in the areas the report stated.
ruffling the feathers in the athletic is a positive step but now it's time to put the pressure on the state to fund UW the way it should be. Vorel, the media, and every sports writer needs to make this a story until our governor and legislature folds into the pressure. If our state officials aren't feeling the pressure to do something what's their incentive to act?
My only real problem with Burman is the hiring of Schroyer. DC - I thought was a great hire, although his hiring and retention of Tormey has led me to question it - a lot. But at the time, it was a "big get" sort of hire. In terms of other sports, we have lost several coaches to other bigger schools, which is a signal that he might know how to pick those sorts of coaches. The VB coach debacle, they dealt with that as best they could, at least from what I know.
But back to Schroyer, I just really hated that hire - and still do. It continues to have latent, negative effects on the program - although most of those are being remedied, with the exception of fan attendance. But mostly, I hate it because it was Burman hiring a friend. It was Burman looking past better candidates to hire a friend that had no business coaching here...even if friendship wasn't really the motivation, it will always stick with me that way. Huge - massive - horrible coaching hire mistake - with one of the big two at UW that we simply cannot afford to screw with in that way. I will never, ever forget losing to a cooking school. I will never, ever forget getting blown out by mediocre teams. I will never, ever forget not being able to take my son to a game because it was so empty and quiet that we could hear every f-bomb and tirade from the baby of a head coach we had at the time. And most of us knew it was terrible from the get-go - at least those of us that were not blinded by friendship and other loyalties. Bad, bad, bad.
Hopefully the report lights a fire under DC, Shyatt and Burman and the rest. IF the "acceptance of mediocrity" is such a slap to the face, incorrect statement - prove the consultants wrong. Never again mention that it is hard to recruit to Laramie. Never again mention that the other schools are bigger, more well funded, more whatever. Go and get it done. Ball State does. Northern Illinois does. DeKalb and Muncie aren't garden spots with billion dollar donors and endless recruiting budgets. And, just perhaps, revisit the CJC mission and emerging country club mentality of the organization...and the ticket policy and the ticket prices. As I have stated before - when you are producing a Dollar Store product, you can't ask customers to pay like they are at Tiffany's.

Remember when the CJC was all about it's "Drive for 5k" mission.. that campaign has been pretty much totally abandoned, it seems.

Also, if you've needed the funding so bad, why didn't you find a way to go get it. Not like the state isn't flush with energy/mineral money. If you don't make dust you eat it. Thanks for trying Tom but your best isn't good enough! Take your weak shit to the NAIA brother.

Burman was probably like - "Hey guys, did you see the nebraska game this year? At least we didn't get blown out, eh?" Probably still trying to take credit for a close loss.
Great point Mr.T - you seldom see anything about the Drive for Five these days. I guess the focus is now on busting the chops of those that you have in the Club to give more. I really think that they should rethink the CJC model - and really incentivize smaller gifts from more folks, but even more so to focus on keeping the members they have already.

Nobody but nobody would like to have a 'mediocre' label applied to them...that is understandable.
I want to qualify that I think Tom is a nice enough guy and I'll concede that he works hard at his job.
However, I find it ironic, that not only a month ago I began a thread speaking directly to the issue of standards at WYO, insofar as I was of the opinion that they were not high enough, and that yes, mediocrity (or in many cases sub-mediocrity) seemed to something that enveloped the WYO Sports brand...my thread at that time then led to the finding that Sternberg had commissioned a study (obviously he was not happy with the status quo) and that study pointed out mediocrity through and through, and the feeling they got that just being 'good enough', was indeed good enough in Laramie.
If I saw this mentality, if many other fans here felt this mentality, and if this commission expressed that they too felt this mentality...is it fair to wonder why Tom wouldn't not wish to look inward and ask himself why this mentality is felt by a whole lot of other people?
It's clear as day folks, Sternberg is the new sheriff in town -- and mediocrity -- or just trying hard is no longer the way it'll work at UW.
Cowboy Up and demand championship contention, figure out a way to make it work, or get out of the way so that a non-excuse maker can take over your role in moving heaven & earth to provide the entire state with the consistently winning programs we deserve.

I remember just a few short weeks ago....beautiful day, 25K in the stands, playing your arch rival.......well we all remember who came to play.....that will not go very far in generating revenue.
