Vigen to the ewes?

Anyone wish he was at Wyoming? Heard from a friend who works with MSU that he had a lot of "not so nice" comments about UW and the community. Take it for what its worth...maybe just rumor.

He was very disparaged at Wyoming by the fan base for running the lack of a point scoring system his boss wanted. Nothing really positive about him until he showed at MSU he wasn’t opposed to scoring points.

There were two or three years on this board where Vigen was insulted daily throughout football season. The experts here determined he knew absolutely nothing about football and wanted him fired. If he read any of that, little wonder he didn't love the community.

Man...I have certainly enjoyed the Border war rivalry ... win or lose it was one of the best IMO. With them leaving the conference .... I know it's a long shot, but if they pull a BYU/UTAH and leave us in the dust, it will really suck.

They can have him. He’s a thin skin puss if he got bent out of shape by a message board
Be careful what you wish for. I would be willing to bet a Vigen lead CSU team would dismantle a Sawvel lead UW team more often than not.

There have been a lot of Wyoming OC's run out of town over the past 10-15 years, and yet here we still are with a putrid offense. Bouknight would be well served to get out of here when the season ends. If not, I'm sure there will be people calling for his head by game 4 of next year.

Ya that’s never going to happen. A school actually has to be good and win games for that to transpire

I see no evidence he’s a great coach. He might well be an average coach, but just because he did well at the “Alabama of the FCS” where they have every advantage doesn’t mean much to me

There aren't going anywhere. They will still be G6.

That will never happen. BYU and Utah are not comparable in this college football landscape. BYU has money because of their affiliation with private money (LDS), Utah is in a large city, hosted the Olympics, and has the state behind them. CSU plays the role of 3rd fiddle in their state. CU and AFA have the national brand for Colorado.

Maybe not a great coach in terms of an FCS Alabama, but he is not afraid to find a QB that can complete the forward pass and receivers that can catch the ball.

Wyoming has since 2016 competed almost every year below 100th nationally in total offense. How many winnable games were left in the table being unable to reduce the 3 and outs including the failure to score points?

Vigen was a reflection of the system while at Wyoming and the pattern has persisted even after his departure. We could even bring up Polasek who has been successful at the “Notre Dame of FCS football” with NDSU. Those guys only improved or kept their programs in top condition. Our hand picked Bohl guy has been Sawful as we all know in continuing the tradition of failing to play offense.

This chart shows our MWC rankings which are a reflective comparison of most games played within the 12 MWC teams.

The left column is the Wyoming total offense ranking. The middle column is the number of teams allowing an average of 375+ yards per game. The right column is the Wyoming total defense ranking. The last column is the MWC w-l total for Wyoming.

2017 12 - 6 - 4: 5-3
2018 10 - 7 - 2: 4-4
2019 11 - 8 - 4: 4-4
2021 8 - 4 - 6: 2-6
2022 9 - 4 - 8: 5-3**
2023 10 - 8 - 3: 5-3
2024 11 - 7 - 9: 2-5
2025 10 - 8 - 4: 2-3

The 8 year avg: 10 - 6.5 - 5: 3.6-3.9

**won 3 games by 3 or less points and had 1 win over a team with a winning record (AFA) while gaining 4 wins over losing teams enroute to a 7-6 record. It could have easily been a 4-8 or worse record with no bowl game but Peasley saved the day since there was not another QB option available on the roster ready to play besides Clemons who wasn’t exactly impressive. It was entirely Bohl’s recruiting decision as Anderson was a rehab recruit and even CB knew Svoboda was no where near ready to play after that 5th string stint at Snow. The OC was Polasek.

While stats like these don’t always translate the w-l results, the consistent pattern is the defense has kept the program competitive enough to flirt with the .500 overall but the lack of an average offense has been detrimental to being able to achieve 8+ wins more frequently. My point is our target should be getting to 8-4 in average years, 10-2 when things work out ideally and only dealing with the 6-6 (or 1 year sub .500) in a rebuild type mode for the $$ invested in the program and facilities that would have had Wyoming considered a key value in the realm of MWC football power. Instead we have spent more time with our “successful” seasons hoping to get win 6 before the last game of the year and that includes seasons with very favorable schedules.

We have been successful at hovering near .500 in conference play while being the 10th ranked offense and 5th ranked defense playing in a conference where any given year more than half (6.5) of the programs have weak defenses.

The fruit has been there for the picking but the failure to field a more competitive offense has eliminated potential success in far greater numbers. It’s my opinion, but I believe Vigen and Polasek would have identified the lack of QB situation in December 2023 and the 2024 season would have had different recruiting without fear a few players might have left the program. I believe either of those guys would have brought in a better OC.

If UNM can go from the MWC 12 spot to the MWC #1 spot in total offense in two seasons it only shows what direction the head guy is leading the program. In our case it’s perpetual mediocrity. And while Wyoming only had a tease of better football with the FCS Joe Glenn, you only need to look at the FCS Eck at UNM who is making the Sawful hire look like a lame one especially since Burman didn’t even consider pursuing Bronco Mendenhal who was key in turning UNM into a winner again while Wyoming has taken the place UNM routinely held.

My formula for success at UW:

1 - sustain the defense as at least average in the MWC. With a better offense I believe the defense would have ranked top 3 or better almost every year of the last 8.
2 - get the offense up to average where it can be competitive at the top level instead of struggling to stay out of the cellar.

I do believe the defense has been better than the numbers indicate but have suffered as a direct result of the head coach led inability to play average offense instead of extremely mediocre offense.

I trashed him constantly and would do it again. Yes, he ran Bohl's offense - but he also ran Bohl's offense at NDSU. There is a big difference between winning in FCS and FBS - as we all learned. Neither Bohl nor Vigen were overly creative, and I can't think that he would do any better than a guy like Bobo ever did for the Sheep. Until CSU reinvests in being tough-minded, like Sonny's teams were, and recruiting in CO, they will find themselves with a gimmick-riddled team that can't compete for championships. For my part, I hope they continue to prioritize Air Raid offense and meat heads like Addazio.

Montana State would have destroyed us the last 2 years. I’m very glad we didn’t have them on the schedule because it would have been embarrassing. And Vigen did have a very creative offense there, especially when he was running the 2 QB system with Mellott and Chambers.

In truth, 4th fiddle. Utah doesn't have a pro football team. The Broncos are the dominant team by far. The sheep are a blip on the radar. The Denver media barely knows they exist.

Meh

Vigen like Johnson was the OC under a head coach whose ideal game would be winning by 3 points in a 10 -7 game. I watched some of MSU last year when they were in the playoff and thought they had an exciting offense. MSU is averaging 38.9 points per game Wyoming 19.4. Candidly I thought Vigen was smart to take the MSU job if he ever had desire to get an HC position at a FCS or FBS program. I believe Craig Bohl would still be the Wyoming coach if it was not for NIL and the portal.
