UW wrestling commit injured in car crash

Doyle Trout, a 4 time state champion wrestler from Nebraska who was committed to Wyoming was in a crash on Easter Sunday. In the accident he broke both of his legs, one of them having to be amputated above the knee. A GoFundMe page has been setup for him, as he has a long recovery ahead of him.

This is absolutely terrible.

I assume his athletic career is over, so UW better honor his scholarship.
 
My understanding is that in cases like this with injuries where it is clear that the athlete is likely to never compete again, the university can honor the scholarship and it does not count against the scholarship allocation limit for that sport. Since the NCAA may be involved, one never knows what the outcome will be. However, honoring the scholarship seems like a win/win for all involved.

If I had Phil Knight or Boone T. Pickens $$$ you can bet your ass I would pay for the kids scholarship myself.

The more I read about this kid, don't be surprised if some day he is out on that mat again. He is a tough, driven cowboy who will work his butt off.

Anthony Robles from Arizona State wrestled without one leg.

Not only did he wrestle with one leg but he won the 2010-11 NCAA individual wrestling championship in the 125-pound weight class.
 
I was originally thinking the same thing, and then I remembered that Anthony Robles was born with only 1 leg. He had 18 years of practice to adapt to wrestling that way. While it would be pretty impressive and I would be all for it; I doubt anyone would be able to be effective enough to wrestle competitively with only a year or two of training.

That and Robles was significantly stronger than his competition upper body-wise because he had the body of a 160 pounder, but was able to make 125 because he was missing a leg. Robles would just manhandle people with this crazy tilt that only a one-legged man with the strength of a gorilla could pull off. Doyle has the body of a 125 pounder so he would not have that same advantage. BUT who know. I hope Doyle follows his dreams, whatever they are.
