Dave Schmitt is one of the best people I have had the privilege to know. I played in a Christian band with him for a few years and he was one of my closest friends during this time. A great swimmer as well as a world class kayaker he once saved a small girl from drowning in the north platte, but whenever someone would bring it up he would just brush it off and change the subject. He was a great guy, and I consider myself lucky to call him my friend.

What a horrible situation, regardless of what transpired. My thoughts are with all his family and friends.

wow, very tragic. I can't imagine the pain/shock/confusion his family must have endured Saturday.
I'm not quite undertanding where he fell though. And for the life of me I can't figure out what he would have been doing. I guess we may learn more in time. Still, very very sad.

Another thought...and although it really isn't important when you are dealing with a loss like this, but was the WAR really "locked up" as UW athletics was so quick to claim? There have been many times that the place is accessible to the public, even when it is supposedly locked. As a parent, I have to wonder if this could have been prevented.

I think the other student involved said that they climbed the fence. So apparantly the gates were locked. What else can the university do really? Anybody that really wants to get in is probably going to be able to.

I saw that in the article. I wonder (not tinfoil hat wonder, but wonder). I also think there is more to the story. Sad, sad, deal all the way around.

I'm sure there is probably more to the story, though I doubt there is anything malicious. I suspect the report will show very high BAC. Just a few friends having fun before they entered the "real world" and a terrible accident ensued. I'm sure many of us could say "There but for the Grace of God, go I."
