UW still has golf teams?

Holy shit. Men finished in last place. +33 for the tourney. Women finished in last place. +46 for the tourney.

Why does UW have Golf again? Is it to justify paying bills (and owning) the UW Golf Course? CJC Fundraising? Title IX? All of the above?

Does Burman's track record indicate a firing to happen soon?*

As I was driving to work the other day, I heard Settle mention the last place finish of the men's team and thought the same thing. Is it a membership requirement for the MWC that we have a certain number of varsity teams? Is it a requirement of the NCAA for D1 status (or whatever they call it now)? Perhaps it is Title IX, but in that case, you don't have to have a men's team sucking money - just keep the women's team and move ahead. Whatever the reason, the results are unacceptable - no matter the fact that this is a non-revenue generating sport. And I would guess that raising money for an indoor practice facility, which I understand is in the works, might be tough without some excitement around the program. Granted, it might be needed to enhance competitiveness, but finishing dead last is not exactly a matter of "enhancing competitiveness" but instead a clear indicator that the program is in the tank.

Is golf really a sport, vis-a-vis having its participants be "athletes"? If golf is a "sport" then so is billiards, horseshoe pitching, and croquette.

I say, get rid of it.

Exactly how would you propose we do that? If we drop Golf, we fall below the minimum required sports competing in the MWC (I think we actually fall below the minimum for FBS as well, as I believe we are only 1 above the minimum right now).

So, the only options would be to add other MWC sports or drop down to a FCS conference. Golf is far less resource intensive (from the athletic department perspective anyway, as they aren't charged with maintenance of Jacoby) than the other sports we could choose. We could add baseball and softball for example, but those would be far more expensive and baseball in Laramie in March is not much better than Golf.

Golf is a difficult fit for UW. The climate and the poor facilities make it very difficult. How do you work on your game when it is snowing and then even when it is manageable temps, the strong winds and weak course are not good proxies for the types of conditions you would see in a tournament? So, it is difficult. However, there are legitimate reasons we maintain the program.

To me, Golf is the least of our problems. I can totally understand the struggles of our golf team. What I want to know is...why can't our FB team be competitive with their IPF? Why is our Men's BB team the worst it has been in 35 years? Pretty sure the AA is climate controlled. Why can't we compete more effectively in cross country, we are at 7220' after all? Where is the progress in Soccer?

No, Golf is the least of our problems. Our complete failure overall as an athletic department and the lack of accountability for those responsible for guiding it are what we should be complaining about.

Drop golf and bring back skiing. Problem solved, even though it might cost a little more to field a ski team again.

I'm looking forward to improved football and basketball programs going forward. Wyoming stepped up and hired some solid assistant coaches in the offseason. Both programs are bound to improve as we move forward.

Peace,

Well stated post. Appreciate your insight & thoughts.

Golf is the least of the problems at UW you are correct...I just wonder why they are given a free pass each and every year, when everyone else is held to some undocumented and unspoken standard (if you can call it a standard). There has to be something more to it. Why the different expectations?

Not many have a favorable opinion or thought about how the UW athletic department is ran, myself included. Buy hey, we got that "Wyoming Guy" running the show, so all is good.

But then they would have to add dyk.., I mean women's, softball or some other women's sport to compensate.
How about women's field hockey or lacrosse to bring in spectator dollars. Wait. For spectator sports (if they don't have it they should) outdoor nude coed beach volleyball. Spectators, Title IX satisfaction, Low uniform expenses. All in one sport. And sand is cheap. Especially interesting in snowy weather.

Skiing sounds more reasonable than golf. Probably get more outdoor practice time too.

I will tell you how our athletics suck. It's because most people don't care. While high schools are building multi million dollar stadiums, we finally upgraded our D1 stadium with boxes. It's not a priority. Nor should it be really. What is our sport teams without a decent school behind them? I prefer UW to rise in the academic ranks first and then athletic. What is a good athletic team? A reason to boast during the off season until the next season begins? It doesn't really matter. I will happily continue to root our kids on.

I'm really not sure what the hell got into me tonight, but Crown Royal Black is delicious. I'm sure that I would give my daughter away for a UW national champion in FB.

I would have loved to read this before you sobered up or changed your mind.

I was going to go off on the lack of fan support being the #1 reason we are not competitive. But then I thought about the old saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it..." :D

One of my best friends places golf at Wyoming, Red shirted this year... he is an absolute stud at golf, one of montana's toughest courses he owns the course record with a 63... leave the program golf is a great sport

I should take that advise more often as well...

Why is it that when I read your posts, I get thirsty? :winky:

I doesn't help that the coach doesn't even has his PGA card. I'm as qualified as he is to coach the golf teams. And he gets paid over $100K to coach and run Jacoby, which is really run by that other guy that runs the shop, bar and tournaments.

Our coach is the only one in the conference that doesn't have a PGA card. Must be Tom's golfing buddy...
