UW research shows football change wouldn't solve money woes

Some good news, president Laurie Nichols has no plans to reclassify the football program and plans to keep it at the FBS level.

We already know that it's not a real issue being considered. We're from here.

You don't because you just took a job as the new beat writer for the dying CST.

Stop posting your CST click bait trash on this board. We know the CST is going broke and it's your job to drum up business, any way you can.

Fuck off loser. We don't want to read your trash.

This dipshit has two posts on this board and both of them are links to articles in the CST he knows will piss Wyoming fans off?

The only way to let him win is to click on the link to that tabloid rag.

The article was hardly an emphatic "we need Wyoming football at FCS". It was I guess we'll save a few bucks by not moving down. Screw-off Foster and Star Tribune. This kind of crap is embarrassing. Know how many people would read your coverage of Wyoming sports if Wyoming were FCS? like 15% as now. Don't crap where you eat, jack offs.

Wyoming would lose millions and millions each year if we moved down. Screw you, Trib.

These aren't meant to be opinion pieces, so you won't see the CST come out and say "we need to stay in FCS." It's just presenting the facts of the situation.

Yeah, I should remember that actual logic doesn't work on this board. Silly me...
I didn't see hard facts in the article. There was no Wyoming will lose x amount in TV revenue, no Wyoming will lose x amount in ticket revenue, Wyoming will lose x amount in parking revenue, no Wyoming will lose x amount in concessions revenue, no Wyoming will lose x amount in advertising revenue., no Wyoming will lose x amount in bowl revenue, no Wyoming will lose x amount in NCAA tourney credits. Yeah. What garbage. Just a bunch of jackasses offering their uneducated opinion. Their opinions are wayyyyy off.

It's the journalistic equivalent of realignment mental masturbation apropos of nothing. The proverbial dead horse re-beaten...

First comparing all of FBS for revenue calculations is absurd.

Secondly, I'm not sure what numbers this hack is using.

If trying to use total budget, why would you do that when analyzing football? UW reports football expenses of a little over 8 million and revenues of a little over 11 million. How would FCS impact those specifically?

I'm certain revenue wold be decimated in FCS. Not only that but basketball revenue would also be decimated because we couldn't remain in the MWC. Basketball would also be in FCS conference and there aren't a lot of great realistic options...Big Sky?

I guess I don't get how dropping down saves any money (Dr. Nichols said it would save some) unless we cut sports.

You'd cut football scholarships from 82 to 63, then you could cut women's sports to match that from Title IX. Your money saved is right there with 40 scholarships. However, your TV deal(s) are now dead and you rely on Root Sports basically (as the Big Sky does). You get less money from the NCAA basketball tournament due to only having one auto-bid (as the Big Sky does). Wyoming basically makes more money from one primetime ESPN game than the Big Sky schools do for an entire year.

There's a reason schools are always fighting to move up, not down. Idaho would still be FBS in 2018 if it wasn't for the fact they're a geographic outlier without a home. If they were down south this wouldn't be an issue for them.

I kind of understand the scholarship reduction idea but even then, those calculations must assume sustained profits in football. Run with me for a second...
I assume that football, even with reduced scholarships, would transition into a break even (at best) sport. So, that means we lose 2 million in revenue (likely way more as you point out). So, football is basically even money at best; no economic benefits of reducing football. That means the 20 scholarship reduction on the Women's side would need to reduce costs by $100,000/scholarship/year assuming all we lose is $2 million in football revenue. The total expenses of all Women's sports other than ball is 4.3 million. To offset the football lost revenue, we'd have to cut almost 50% of women's sports (excluding basketball).

If the idea is that football (and basketball) revenue stays the same, I can follow the thought process. I'd strongly question it but at least I'd understand where there thoughts are coming from.
