UW Budget Cuts from WTE (not sure if this post belongs here)

Unreal. Wyomingites HAVE to be watching too much CNN. The state can't get coal out of the ground fast enough...the state has the Hathaway scholarships in place...the state has no "state" tax (and never has)...the state has eliminated all taxes on groceries / non-prepared food (for about 3 years now)...the rainy day fund has to be in the double digit billion figure...etc.

And here we are with budget cuts. Somebody (or some group) has their head in their ass. Just because the rest of the nation (most of it at least) is striving to make headlines regarding these tough economic times...things really ARE GREAT in the state of WYOMING! The easiest way out a recession folks, is to support your local economies by SPENDING money!

Now would be the perfect time to invest in the University of Wyoming, including athletics, as all of our competitors are in crunch-time mode!

Wyoming also has a constitution that makes it illegal to ever go into debt. 6 months ago we had a projected surplus of 1 billion dollars, a few months ago that was revised to less that 200 million based on natural gas prices being at their lowest point since the 1980s. That's why the govenor has put a hiring freeze in place and is talking about budget cuts. Hate to tell you this but the decisions are being made on facts not what someone heard on CNN. If the numbers look better when the next projection comes out in a few weeks I am sure things will be relaxed a little bit.

Snowman, I read the article about the budget surplus...and you are correct, it stated (in mid-December) that Wyoming would have a 900+ million dollar surplus. And then, (in February) it stated that Wyoming wouldn't be so fortunate, and would only have a 200+ million dollar surplus. And finally, last month, it stated that Wyoming may not have a surplus at all...but that was yet to be factually determined.

In all reality though...we are talking about a BUDGET SURPLUS...meaning there is more income than expenses to operate the State of Wyoming...right? Not sure any other state out there is fortunate enough to have a surplus of ANY amount...and we are cutting our budget because we do? That is what I would like to call the "CNN Whoas Me Let's All Jump On The Budget Cut Bandwagon" theory.
