Utah Private Equity deal

rocket city poke

Well-known member
Utah is using a private equity company now for their athletic department
$500 million in revenue from it. Just amazing how far BYU and Utah have risen in this environment. To think Wyoming used to be in the same conference and pretty consistently win games against these two programs. THere would be a very interesting WSJ article or Athlon sports article about Wyoming athletics and how far it has fallen.

This period of time that you speak of must predate my fandom (the start of the Mountain West conference).
The MW started because BYU and Utah viewed us as equals and wanted to play us (and others) more often. They were tired of playing Tulsa and SMU and those other schools in the WAC 16. Yes we have fallen that far in 20 years.

I was going to post this exact message. PE expects returns. If they don’t get them, they are ruthless.
I spent quite a bit of my career working with, advising and transacting with private equity in the energy sector. They expect returns, ‘yes’ men and typically have no use or concern for ethics. They typically don’t care if they burn bridges or harm longstanding relationships, making money for them is the only concern.

I read that Utah has built in safeguards to protect their decision-making, autonomy, etc. No matter what Utah does, private equity makes the mafia look like a pushover. I would be VERY concerned if I was about to lash up with a PE group and wouldn't want to be the test case for the concept.

It is a major gamble, and one that officially kills college football if it is allowed to run rampant. My hope is that those selling their souls are only doing so temporarily. It’s the only way teams outside of the SEC and BIG10 have a chance to make a case for themselves being invited to the big boy table when the split happens. That said, even if it works and teams start selling out to private equity, and a split occurs, whatever minor league they end up with will eventually flop. I really don’t think college sports fans anywhere would enjoy rooting for a team that has no connection to their universities. The pageantry is a major factor for why college football is so popular.
