UNLV @ Wyoming

Ho-lee shit! What a great game! Me and westWYOpoke went up and did our part to bring back the Dome of Doom. There may have only been 7,100 fans there, but it got loud enough at one point that you couldn't hear the refs blow their whistles (which they did WAY too often). This team is definitely for real. When we start getting higher caliber players in here playing in this system Wyoming will be a scary team for the rest of the country to deal with!

Did it seem to anyone else that everutome the crowd really got into it the refs would call a foul just to shut us up?

Keep refreshing it? Reload your browser I hate to imagine you didn't get to see any of that game but I'll be happy to replay it.

This was the signature win we had to have to even get us into talk about being on the bubble and this is probably one of the biggest wins for us. Are you using the link in my sig? a bookmarked link or the one from the post?

I was using the one from your post. Thanks.

The Livestream worked and it was great to see. The Pokes are back. We can now reasonably hope for a win on any given night.

Did you hear what Adam was saying about how this is more like what he remembered and though about coming down to the A-A from Cody?

Live in the now man!

Don't diminish what the guys we have bring to the program. I could be several years before we have the top two field goal shooting percentage players in the conference. Coach speaks well of Luke Martinez's shooting ability.

Last time Coach Shyatt was here, he certainly did not have the raw power along the front line that he has to work with this year.

I have been a fan for as long as I can remember. Enjoy the ride now and don't spend too much effort looking down the road for a future that we hope for. Obviously the guys that are on the court are getting the job done. We have seen too many great recruits arrive who got hurt before their full potential was realized.

I have high hopes for Coach Shyatt's tenure. I have also seen many coaches do their most impressive job coaching during their first year. I suspect it is because the pior coach had different strengths and the new coach often brings strengths that fill in the gaps left by the prior coach's weaknesses.

Just enjoy the ride. This team has some really good peices that will be hard to replace when these guys have moved on.

No doubt......I don't think anyone is shittin' on this current group of players, just stating that a grand era of basketball is ahead for Wyoming*. I for one am really hoping to see Wyoming's name somewhere on my bracket this March. The MWC tourney will be insane this year. If Wyoming continues to play this level of suffocating defense in Vegas, then the Rebels, Aztecs, and Lobos will seriously have to watch themselves.

Shyatt himself said that Wyoming is his last stop.

It probably is, but talk is cheap. I'll wait until he actually declines offers to believe that statement. Coaches say that all the time.

I agree. It's the normal Coachspeak.

Age and stage-of-career makes a difference. Coach is in his early sixties.

As a comparable issue, any bets on whether Fischer's last stop is SDSU? I would guess "yes"

You're probably right. Nobody is saying he'll leave, just that coaches do this all the time. I'll wait for him to build a resume on turning down other schools before I slam that door shut.

Here's what gives me pause on the "final destination" talk from coach. Last time around he was in a "love affair" with Wyoming and there was all sorts of talk about dedication and so on. I know, Clemson was supposed to be the dream job, but there are other dream jobs out there.

He was up front about Clemson last time around. This time around he do not think that he carved out any exceptions. I am curious whether he envisions a 3-4 year run or if he envisions coaching beyond the graduation of his first recruiting class.

As I understand it, he turned down inquiries from other programs to become a head coach again while he was at Florida.

Also, I would not discount the fact that Coach Shyatt has often made a point that he knows what the Wyoming program can be based on what he saw as an Assistant at New Mexico. He was at UNM from 1981-1988. If we think back to that time in our program's history and use that as the basis to compare Wyoming to other programs around the country, it is pretty easy to understand why a coach might actually believe that Wyoming is a really, really good place to coach.

Add to that the fact that Coach also has experience with trying to bring players to Laramie. He got committments from Josh Davis, Brett McFall, Chris McMillian, Ugo Udezue, Anthony Blakes and Andy Young, and you have a picture of his concrete understanding of what Wyoming Cowboy basketball really should look like.

Finally, look at the kind of players from within Wyoming that Coach Shyatt has first-hand experience working with at UW. Both Gregg Sawyer and Adam Waddell are home-grown guys that have played key rolls as seniors for Coach Shyatt coached teams. He knows what kind of ball players are already available within the default primary recruiting area. You will notice that he did not hesitate to sign a player out of Torrington right away.

Wyoming should be one of the really good programs west of the Mississippi and we have a coach that really likes Laramie and has first hand experience with the Wyoming program performing up to its potential. I believe him when he says this is where he plans to retire from. I do not think he is really looking for another gig. I just do not know how many more years that he wants to coach. The fact that his oldest son is in town has to help him feel like staying. At some point I would expect that Coach will start thinking about spending time with new grandchildren when they arrive. Until that time, we have a coach that has a better grasp of what it is like to coach in the A-A at peak potential than many current fans understand.
