Unlv game

I'm putting out my predict the score now.

The best I can hope for right now is.....Wyo 49, UNLV 35.

Really, I want to put Wyo 38, UNLV 35.

Last Saturday's game was hard to watch. Seems like everyone on D was playing out of their natural position, because they were. We have 2 ex-linebackers playing DT (Knapton & Durbin), T Gipson at Safety (although he did ok considering he was usually the first guy to touch the ballcarriers), D Harris playing MLB when he was OLB last year, B Hendricks playing OLB when he was MLB last year. I swear I read something about Boise St recruiting guys to play the positions they did in HS. I think that has some merit as it has to speed up recognition of how plays are developing. Reading through all the traffic and trying to play downhill must be hard for someone who used to play OLB (especially with a 300 OL in your face on every play). Covering guys as an OLB must be hard when you are used to stuffing the run as a MLB. But, then again, it is football and you shouldn't forget how to tackle just because you start the play in a different spot.

Well it appears we moved too many DL recruits to the OL because it was our biggest weakness last year. We moved too many and P Mertens getting sick really left us too thin (as in not enough guys) at a position we were too thin (guys needing to fatten up) to begin with.

As I reflect, I think we can actually get away with moving guys to other positions on the outside to get faster, but we need beef in the middle. We need a couple bug stud DTs, and a big stud MLB to stuff the run. If O Schober was healthy he could stuff the run as long as OL went not in his face all night. Hell, if we had a couple Fred Givens, and Knapton at MLB USU would not have gone 7 yards untouched on every down. Those are big physical guys at those positions, put speed outside all you want.

Sorry for the rant, but we just looked like CSU did last year when we played them and that is bad. I think these guys can get it done, but we need DT recruits ASAP. If that is not our top priority it should be. I see we have made offers to several guys that have gone to BCS schools. We need to make offers to 25 BCS caliber DTs and take the first 3 that commit, then worry about other positions. Maybe move E Yarbrough to MLB, and get Ndamukong Suh and Haloti Ngata to plug the middle. I bet no one would run up the middle on us then.

Rant over, not real well thought out. Go Pokes, we need to win this Saturday or I fear most UW fans will give up on the season. I still think we can get it done, go Pokes!

I can see us losing...if the UNLV team that trounced Hawaii shows up, we are fucked.

Which Poke team shows up? The one that looked good against Nebraska and Texas State? Which coaching team will show up? The one that almost gave it away at Bowling Green? The one that was totally unprepared for Utah State? I think UNLV is looking at this game as one they can pull out - and that assumption may be close to the truth.

I hear what you are saying about players switching positions. However, Hendricks should know how to play OLB. He played several different spots during the 3-4 years. I know a lot of people would like to see Eddie Yarborough at linebacker, but he should be a pretty good DE. He is pretty decent size right now and should only get bigger with a year of D1 weight training. He is a legit 260 lbs right now, would be good to see him as a 270 plus DE next year.

The move that puzzled me was BJ Sumpter from DT to OG back to DT. He didn't make the rotation for OL so why move him? At least Tyler Strong is playing most games on the O-line, so not an entirely wasted move there. I like Korey Jones moving back to LB also. We should have a pretty big D-line next year with Purcell, Michel, Durbin, Yarborough, Kurt T., Sumpter, and Patrick Mertens back (Most are well over 280, and could be pushing 300 by next year). Sony P. and Mark Willis have looked decent at times this year, but are undersized at DE. It would be nice to have Yarborough and Miraldo at DE next year (Michel was supposed to play DE this year at 286 LBS, moved to DT because of depth issues).

Great point. And we head into another bye week after. Wonder if it will be "used" differently.

McPeachy; good question. That last bye was obviously not used well. It wasnt a good time for a bye in my opinion, but nothign we could do about that. Coming off the Neb game, I think DC gave the guys too much time off, and they got their minds off of football and lost concentration. This team has far too much to learn for them to be taking days off.
