UNI is a paper tiger and we will defeat them.

Love Wyo Nation, both the message board and fan base. One minute, everything is going to hell and Wyoming might as well drop to FCS and play in the Big Sky, but the moment a sport has success on a national level, confidence goes through the roof.

I don't know, maybe UNI is overrated. I'll stay cautiously optimistic and say we need great games from Adams/Nance to win.
We're a very bi-polar fanbase. :( :( :D

Definitely worried about their 3 point shooting. 3 guys over 40%, they're gonns stretch us, and our perimeter can be iffy at times.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Seasn3% . Conf3%
10 Tuttle, Seth....... .429 .400
11 Washpun, Wes. .395 .250
14 Buss, Nate........ .407 .373
01 Mitchell, Deon... .452 .575
20 Morgan, Jeremy .344 .327
05 Bohannon, Matt .379 .397
04 Jesperson, Paul .422 .480
33 Lohaus, Wyatt.. .485 .600

These are all our guys who have taken more than one 3pt shot per game on average.
Pokes are definitely going to have to play solid perimeter defense. This is going to be dogfight for 40. I'm really looking forward to Tuttle/Nance, though. If Larry's "in the zone" inside, I like our chances.

Great early round matchup. I am a little nervous with all of the WYO love in Twitter Universe concerning this game. Too much of a 12/5 upset mentality.

 I look forward to the football version. Lose to some opponent we think we're better then, pfft....send Bohl's ass back to Fargo. But the moment the Pokes are headed for the New Mexico Bowl....GTFO, Alabama. There is a new sheriff in town.

This is going to be a fun week.

I agree that we can beat them but saying they are a paper tiger I disagree with.

I agree the MVC overall this year wasn't great and really N. Iowa and Wichita was basically all they had. Evansville and Illinois St. were decent. The rest of the league was really bad.

N. Iowa and Wyoming play very similar. Northern Iowa played a better OOC schedule. The win over Iowa and then the loss in OT at VCU were both impressive. Stephen F. Austin is a very good team also.

Wyoming had the tougher conference schedule. That is when we were hit with mono though. Think it will be a good game. Neither team will be intimidated.

Remember N. Iowa's 2010 team? They went to the sweet sixteen as a 9 seed beating UNLV in the first game and upsetting the 1 seed Kansas.

This won't be any cakewalk I know that.

Neither Evansville or Illinois State were as good as Boise or CSU, and the rest of the MVC was really weak this year.

UNI's loss at VCU was no more "impressive" than our loss at SMU. Stephen F. Austin is a decent team but they have no RPI top-50 wins and three of their four top-100 wins were against Sam Houston State.

I don't expect a cakewalk and I never said so. It will be a tight game throughout and if we don't bring our A game we will lose. But these are two evenly matched teams. Get out of here with that "They were underseeded" bullshit. They racked up a gaudy win total against a mediocre schedule (especially in conference play) and the committee duly placed them about where they belong. Again, absent the mono problem we'd probably be sitting at 28-ish wins and our resume would look every bit as good as UNI's or Wichita's with the added benefit of having gone through a conference season and conference tourney with seven games against tournament-caliber competition instead of just two.

The key for me is that Nance and/or Cooke will be able to defend Tuttle without doubling, which means their shooters will get fewer open looks. I firmly believe that we have the best two players in this game. Tuttle is a good player but to me he's a notch below Nance. I don't see anyone on UNI's roster that compares to Adams. We are an extremely disciplined team that won't play into UNI's strengths. I just feel really good about this matchup and I believe that if we play as well as we are capable of playing we will win.

I actually agree with pretty much everything you just said . A long as Nance and Adams are ready to play then we can win this game for sure. They don't have anyone like Adams at all. But few teams do. Tuttle is close to Nance but Nance is better. The main thing is their 3 point shooting. But then again every team that is supposed to be great 3 point shooting teams we play (Boise St. , CSU) we went 4-0 against them. That is when we were healthy all of those games as well.

It's amazing we started out the second half against SDSU without a bucket for 9 minutes and still won. Testament to our D. I can see some long scoreless stretches for both teams

It's truly incredible. I still can't believe that we went that long without scoring and still won.

OK. Here's some of LanderPoke's expert (and hugely biased ) observations on the Pnthers after watching the first half of their game vs Wichita:

1. They have the whitest team in the country
2. Tuttle reminds me of Boise's Duncan. Big, white, slow, plodding, but very skilled. I think we will have our way with them down low. They like to force feed him like we do Larry.
3. Those dudes can indeed shoot the three. They are not scared to take deep ones. We need to be ready to defend the three.
4. They play aggressive, good d, but I think Adams will be able to penetrate and do good things.
5. If we have to double team their yeti in the post we could be screwed because they can hit open shots.
6. I think we can take them :thumb:

I hope their shooting cools off after a 2-week break.

We were a pretty good shooting team too through our non-conference schedule, which is probably about the same strength as who UNI played most of the season.

They're really good, but I really like our chances. Do they have anyone that can keep Adams from penetrating and dishing? I feel like this is a game where Adams, if he's on, could have about 10 dimes.

While I don't agree UNI is a paper tiger, I do think we can beat them. My weekend was a blur from celebrating Wyoming's win over SDSU. I freely admit I buried this team a few weeks ago, and will take all the crow I can eat. What an accomplishment to win the school's first conference title. Seeing their name on the selection show Sunday about made my heart burst with pride. Anything they do from here is icing on the cake. I'd love to see them win, but this season is already a success. I just wish I could get to Seattle for the game. I will be rooting like heck from home, however!

Yep, his name is Wes Washpun. You have been warned.

Seriously, do you know how many times Josh Adams has made SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the day over the last couple of years? Be afraid, be VERY afraid........ :winky:

Thanks for the warning. I haven't seen your guy play, but Adams speed, skill, and athleticism is a very tough matchup for anyone in the country.

I'm hearing that UNI has a bunch of white Iowans, which leads me to believe that we may have a mismatch with Adams. While our team has some very athletic players, I don't think we have anyone that could stop Adams if he played for someone else. I'm expecting to play against a bunch of smart, disciplined players that don't overwhelm you with athleticism, but beat you by being deliberate, defending hard, and not making mistakes. If they have a back court full of Riley Grabaus (which is good), I think that one Josh Adams could wreak some havoc.

Good luck to Washpun trying to guard him . :D

TENPIN, WASHPUN guarding Adams?

He best get some help. It isn't really that hard to set a screen or two to gain some separation from a good defender. We're deeper on the perimeter than a lot of folks realize - our offensive game, while prone to misfiring, is pretty fun when it's on. And, for D, Adams and Hankerson tend to shut all sorts of folks down, and Grabau isn't bad. Nonetheless, I am a little concerned that UNI's guards might have more depth and overall be a little quicker than ours, or better ball handlers.

Here's how I see it: If one team or the other gets hot from the land of three, the game gets out of hand quickly. Otherwise, a very deliberate slugfest.

Wyo, by 6.

This is from last season. Looks like it should be a good match up of similar players both down low and out on the perimeter.

This second one also from last season is Deon Mitchell, he's the starter and gets probably 2/3 of the minutes while Washpun gets the rest at PG.

This last one is just kind of a little post game highlight segment after coming from behind to win the MVC title.

One thing I notice on this Washpun kid, he seems to play off ball a lot and rely on his superior athleticism to make up the difference. Adams is explosive enough that he may not get a second opportunity if Josh takes him first step. There is no doubt he is a freak too judging by his blocks, his speed and his overall appearance. I haven't watched this Washpan kid in person, he could be a legit stud, I don't know. All I know is there have been only a couple guys in our league who could play with Josh Adams and in the end he usually had the final say...Take that for what its worth.

Washpun is a good player and a good athlete for sure. He isn't on the same level as josh Adams though.

UNI fans... it should also be noted that Adams although can destroy teams and make Top 10 over and over in 1 game, he has been known to disappear at time. Throughout the last 7 or 8 games, he is averaging something like 18+ ppg, yet 1 of those games he went 1/10 or something like that from the field with like 3 points all night.

Point is, Adams is great, and plays like Russell Westbrook, but at the end of the day, he isn't Russell Westbrook.
