Under D.C. Offense will improve, Defense gets worse.

It's a very vicious cycle and it happens all the time at all kinds of universities around the country.
A new coach is brought in because the team plays well on one side of the ball and terrible on the other. Before Joe Glenn, the offense was good and the defense was horrendous. Under Glenn, the defense became a National Power, and the offense went to horrendous. Now, JUST AS I PREDICTED, the offense will get alot better under Christensen's tenure, but the defense will get ALOT worse! Instead of 14-10 games... We'll be lucky to win games 37-31. It's very hard to get a good offense and defense at the same time. So expect the offense to slowly get better and the defense to slowly get worse. In 2 years, be prepared for every game to be a shootout.

its only because we are actually scoring and not turning the ball over now.

our defense the past few years pretty much played in garbage time, the other offenses didnt need to do much cause they were already up 7 or 14 to 0 a few minutes in. they started to relax, and the defenses were good enough to just shut down our miserable offense.

Yes, to be fair, our old defense was more than a little bit overrated, which is why teams like Utah didn't have a problem putting up 50 against it when they were motivated to do so. Sure they could grind it out against run-heavy teams, but once the ball was in the air, they got burned badly.

The current defense is probably at that same level, with the difference that they're taking the ball away more.

Not sure about this...

There are some integral parts missing from last years D, including leadership from the middle. The season is young & the staff is new.

Just like in years past...we are too conservative when we need to be aggressive...the only difference this year versus last year, is the talent level in 2 or so key positions could make up for the conservative style (like our DB's laying 10 - 15 yards off the ball).

We don't have that luxury this year...#24 doesn't look as good (he will step up I believe), #7 is no Quincy (yet), and Ward Dobbs...well...isn't suited up.

The only reason Utah was able to put up 50 on us was because we gave them the ball 5 times in each of the past 3 games. Two or three of those directly resulted in td's. If you look at the stats of last years game, we actually outgained them.

This year, the defense has allowed some big plays, but is still solid. Just need to cut down on the 3rd and long conversions we've seen too often this year.

Go Pokes!!

I think it comes down to our team goal of generating turnovers. The last six years we would rather get a sack or stough the run with tons of blitzes and eight men in the box. We almost always rushed five. We gave up a ton of big plays as well.

This year we would rather make teams drive the field. We stay away from the big plays. We don't blitz as often. Teams have more success running and more success with short passing routes. It results in more interceptions and more yardage given up, but less points per game.

This thread is ridiculous. You can't judge a coach by his first 5 games. I think our defense has been a little overrated the past couple years. The only reason we were any good defensively is because we had a low total defense rating. Simply meaning the other team didn't usually have to drive the ball very far because they always had a short field = less yards given up. We didn't force turnovers and we still gave up a ton of points. We were still losing games 50-7 plenty of times. Thats not always on the offense, the defense has its own share of guilt in those defeats. You win as a team you lose as a team. Especially when you lose 50-7 often enough.

"Instead of 14-10 games we will be lucky to win 37-31 games"

This quote makes no sense. In the past several years, we haven't been able to win ANY games, and most of the time we were losing big, so the style of the game doesn't even really matter. I'll take 37-31 wins every week if thats what it takes.

BTW there is not that big of a difference between winning 37-30 and winning 17-10. Point differential is a better statistic for that. 17-10, ya your defense was good...but your offense barely got anything. 37-30, your offense was good, but your D could've played better.

If you don't like Christensen and can't get over your love affair with Joe "I can't win Mountain West Conference games, but look I can play a Piano!" Glenn, then go seek him out in Arizona and be buddies.

Probably one of the sillier posts I have read in awhile. No question we miss the experience breske brought to the table and English is pretty young. Personally I think that is the big difference. I expect the D to improve as English gains game time experience not get worse. Bank IT

WOW! East Popcorn State is a freaking Genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To say he hit the nail on the head is the understatement of the millenium.

Nostradomus or just GENIUS?

I really hope Wyonation gets a good deal on bandwidth and disk space because this thread is sure wasting alot of it.

I sadly have to agree. We need to fire English and get a DC with a brain.

No agrument here on theman/popcorn. But we DO need a better DC and soon.

Defense peaked in 2006 and has been getting worse since. You have to go back to the 90's to find a consistent offense. It's really not that hard to catch that pattern. The real money is figuring out when both the offense and defense pull out of the rut they have been. When is the next bowl game/conference championship trophy? Will there still be college ball then or will everything have merged into the NFL and games will be played every night on the moon?
