Unbelievable Statistics! Well, not really...

There have been over 200 "arrests" for students that are receiving academic scholarships for the use &/or possession of Marijuana / Controlled Substances at the University of Wyoming since the Fall Semester began.

1. That number PALES in comparison to similar western universities - so folks need to stop with the BS

2. Why the hell haven't these 200+ offenders been humiliated on the front page of the CST / WTE / Boomerang / BI?

3. Why hasn't the academic community called for pulling their scholarships?

Time to move on from this deal...and yes, I need to take my own advise. For all you old bastards out there like me, statistically speaking, 49% of Americans use or have tried happy smoke. 158.8 million people around the world currently use happy smoke.

This isn't 1936 people...

Couldn't agree more. They paid the price, they will learn and move on. Please let this topic die.

I think an important discussion occurred on this board due to this event. I know our collective voices might not mean shit, but I also think we might hold a little more water then we think as a fan barometer for UW (a few UW grads right???). I feel like most our posters were upset because yes these are athletes that have a little more responsibility then your average UW student, so the event has bothered most. Some are bothered more deeply then others. Quite a few of our posters did stick up against weed laws and Laramie/Wyoming's treatment of such. I think we've tried to back the players as much as we can through the haze. It could be important to Shyatt/some sort of administration and players if they actually read this board to see where the base stands. From what I gauge most of us want weed laws to move away from draconian punishments, if not damn near close to legalized. I mean they have to cough up 750 a piece for this??? That's a shitload for a college kid! I hope they don't have to cough up there scholarships as well (that's not everyone's view btw feeling like 7 or 8 out of 10 here though). I'm guessing views of this issue have shifted in Wyoming more in the past 10 to 20 years then I imagined. Weird when politics, laws, and sports mix but this one just jumped in our lap unfortunately.

Feel like I've said more then my peace on this now. I kinda want to disappear for the board until some recruiting news pops up. No news will be good news in my book for our bball team until then. Have good times until football season fellas and stay up out there if you can :thumb:

Good post. As I said in another thread. What happened happened. The kids paid their price. Time to move one.

McPeachy - Like Ronald Reagan's "trust but verify" and I have no reason not to believe those stats, could you point the board to where that data was found? 200 athletes with scholarships at Wyoming being cited, arrested or punished for weed is a "Systemic Problem" that needs to be addressed.

He said students on academic scholarships not student athletes.

How do the drug tests work (I get that they were caught by campus police and all gave themselves up instead of one guy taking the fall).

Is it that they are tested for marijuana in season only? Or is the testing "random" and throughout the school year?

I do know that the last meeting of the year between a football coach and his team is a reminder that the NCAA doesn't test fr steroids over the summer, but what are the current NCAA rules for in season testing?

From the student-athlete handbook, linked in another thread:

All selection for testing is done randomly by the accredited laboratory conducting the specimen analysis EXCEPT when a student-athlete is selected due to “reasonable suspicion”

If a student-athlete is suspected of using banned substances (as outlined in the UW Athletic Department Substance Abuse Policy), he/she may be selected to be tested. This selection is not random but based on “reasonable suspicion.” “Reasonable Suspicion”exists where an observed and articulated basis in fact indicates that a student-athlete is using alcohol or other drugs in violation of this policy. The evidence supporting the suspicion must be reasonably reliable and should be clearly documented in writing. The process for selection via “reasonable suspicion” is outlined below:
1. If a member of the athletic department suspects that a student-athlete is using a banned substance and wants to have that student-athlete tested via the UW Substance Abuse Policy; he/she must complete the “Reasonable Suspicion to Suspect Prohibited Substance Use Notification Form” (Appendix A).
2. The Substance Abuse Committee will review the form and render a decision as to whether the student-athlete will be tested. A majority of the committee (a minimum of 3 members) must agree that there is sufficient “reasonable suspicion” before testing can occur.

I still didn't ever understand this. Did they all fail tests? Were they "reasonable suspicion" tests? Or were they caught by law enforcement some how?

If they were turned in by UW staff then aren't we looking at 4 or 5 wide open scholarships right now? I'm worried about keeping James and others around.
