Brace yourself......lots of rationality in this article. Not a ton of homerism. :P

Great stuff gopokes1399.....balanced but accurate.

Good article. And agree on every point.

We have a great QB and a deep, yet talented recieving corps. The only thing holding the offense back is the line. If the JC Center can at least match what Carlson did, we should be alright up front. Otherwise, it'll be a long season.

I'm not of the opinion that the Oline goes as the JC center goes. IMO, the addition of the two JC's (who redshirted last year) makes the line better than it was with Leonard and Magnusson. Both Jake Jones and Tyler Strong also had a year to mature. The JC center could be the icing....but not the stick that is holding the cake up.

About the center having trouble snapping in shotgun formation. How about going to a pro set with Smith under the center? The pro game is heavy in passing and the QB almost always takes an under-the-center snap.

Pretty good article that I think nailed a lot of the issues we've been talking about here for a while. Just one pet peeve to point out:

"but from what players have told me DC is by all intensive purposes the OC. "

It's "for all intents and purposes." Exactly what is an intensive purpose??

Ok, enough grammar policing. Article is right on in that as Smith goes so goes this team. And that is dependent on the Oline. They better be ready.

GO POKES!

Good write up, yet wasn't Williams perfect this spring on field goals and extra points (scrimmages)?

Also, a mentioned before, RS Jr. Walker Madden will make us all proud on the O-line...I think fans will be wondering why he didn't play in 2012 (and it was to bulk up a bit).

Good write up and analysis. welcome to the team.

to Adv8RU12... the thing with spread offenses is all about passing lanes and timing. under the center, the passing lanes on quick reads would be through the helmet of our tackles. not saying it can't be done, I wish we came under center too for more multiple packages.

I did some quick math... smith is averaging around 33.5 passes per game over his career. I factored in the missing two games from last year. His yards per attempt went up two yards last year to right at 8 yards per attempt (average). What I like is that with that many attempts he still carries 62% accuracy. Pretty damn good considering we don't demand 8 in the box. I'm very excited to see what this offseason's growth has done for smith. the addition of krill has me excited, and I want to see what an up-tempo offense with smith at the helm can do.

I also pray that we have a consistent center... also good points about the kicking game. ??? who knows...

I wasn't trying to say that it all depends on our center, the main point was that the guys in spring camp had trouble just snapping the ball and getting it to Smith cleanly. If Smith doesn't touch the ball, he can't make a play.

Thank you all for your kind words and comments I look forward to publishing more work

We have 4 centers on the roster and a long snapper. Hopefully someone will step up. Maybe throw 40 pounds of muscle on the long snapper over the next 18 months, and we'll be okay for the 2014 season.

Nice write up. I still don't agree with us having a good offense. I believe we have a lot of the weapons needed and some good looking stats, but offense is scoring points, and we are still not so good at that yet. Having said that, this season looks promising if the O-line is even average.
