Wyoming was way ahead of everyone on civil rights for women. You learn something new every day.

Gave women the right to vote in 1869, first year as a territory.

Little known fact: Wyoming gave women the right to vote because they needed the extra votes to become a territory. Still awesome that we were the first, but it takes a bit of the luster off of it.

This. I'll take the bragging rights about equality, but let's not pretend that the powers that be at the time thought women deserved the right to vote. It was a way to become a territory and gain the benefits of that status.
