Transfer Portal

I wish Harris and Kellman good luck. I am sorry they decided to leave but cannot honestly say that they would have made a difference by staying under the current regime.

And that is the problem - if you are a talented freshman or sophomore, if I take off my B & G glasses, you really should think about getting out. Next year will be worse than this year - I fear - and then you are stuck. You will probably have a lot of ugly losses hanging around your neck and the specter of a new staff coming in. We all know that we are staring down the barrel of another crap season, even with a much lighter schedule. We won't compete for a conference championship. Sawful is likely a lame duck by early October. The stands will be increasingly empty (unless we retire Josh's number again). This feels a lot like Linder's and Edwards' last years. And we are only now STARTING to dig out from beneath those ugly times in MBB. I hate these lost years. They never work out well.

Tried to read some of the online articles about how the transfer portal works and the deadlines to declare if an athlete is entering the portal. It is mind-numbing and confusing. Can anyone tell exactly when football players have to declare they are entering the portal and how long do they have to do it?

One single window Jan. 2 to Jan. 16 except an extra 5 day window if a playoff team had a game during the window or after. Any player desiring to transfer must declare by Jan 16 but no real deadline to sign with a new team.

The one exception is if a head coach leaves, players get a window to transfer. (Ie if we fired Sawvel in April, then players would have a new window to transfer).

This begs the question...what is a team supposed to do if they fire their coach after the January window and a significant amount of the team leaves?

Most other transfers would have already found a landing spot in the January window. I would have to think that team would be at a very significant disadvantage for the upcoming season. They would be basically forced to bring on transfers that nobody else wanted or sign a bunch of high school kids that weren't good enough to be signed by another team already. That would be one hell of a rough season.

Wyoming already experienced this when Linder left after the portal period. Linder screwed Wyoming so bad with his timing. Good riddance to him. We had to put together a team of scraps. It didn’t turn out too great in year one but year two is looking good.
