http://deadspin.com/#!5791461/the-truth-about-race-religion-and-the-honor-code-at-byu

Be sure to check out the other stories about athletes who ran afoul of the honor code office there. Good stuff. I'm so glad that there's someone out there who is pumping the brakes a little on the "BYU is so honorable for sticking to their guns" bullshit.

The Upset Blog went on a Tweet storm about this today, here's what he said:
Important note on the Deadspin article about BYU and the Honor Code: All the anecdotal evidence comes from the Gary Crowton era.

Also, Deadspin using apocryphal, second-hand writings as "official LDS Church doctrine" regarding blacks.

"Interracial dating taboo subject." LOL. For those who have problem with it, it exists in the South too. Doesn't mean every1 thinks that way
.

Not discounting Deadspin article entirely, there are some serious points made. Journalistically, it's muddled w/fallacies & generalizations

But facts/not facts aside, those players DID feel that way. Some did feel they were led to believe honor code wasn't serious.

Some plyrs just don't paying attention, some revise history after feeling slighted, but it DID happen. Not saying theres NO legitimacy to it

Another point: the players quoted in the article clearly did not want to live a life as required by the honor code. Others have 0 problem

Many players go to BYU and can't live that life. Which is fine. No judgment there. But many also end up joining the LDS Church.

So are we shifting the point of emphasis to the desires of the player and whether or not they actually WANT to live a BYU sort of life?

Also, funny all this stems from Davies, a black athlete. Cuz Davies is LDS. He's 1 of the ppl who could "go cover it up w/their LDS bishop"

Deadspin also misleading on story in Book of Mormon. Light-skinned people spend much of book being "wicked," while dark-skinned are "holy"

Not on a crusade here, just kills me how much people on every side of every issue refuse to sit down with each other and talk.

A clear agenda emerges when a writer is unwilling to contact one of opposing viewpoint and say "explain to us why we might be wrong."

f they did, they might speak to Brian Logan, black, non-Mormon JC transfer, who loved it so much he got his cousin Joe Sampson to commit

I do find part abt students finishing degrees troubling, not sure if race a factor tho.BYU *is* often way less forgiving than they should be

It was those racist policies back in the 60s that caused the Black 14 incident here and subsequently killed our program for 20 years.

The tweet that they were all from the crouton era, I guess that the tweeter conveniently forgot about Ronny Jenkins the Black running back who was given a couple of chances in the Edwards era,But when he started doing coeds two at a time they pulled the plug!
