Top 25 Coaches Poll

The best thing that could have happened was getting out of the polls. It's a damn distraction. We play better with something to prove.

Yes and No, They need to learn to win with that distraction or we will never get any recognition.

Conspiracy theory:

I think ESPN made their writers and affiliates give us a bump last week, just to get a number next to our name for the games they were televising.

Better ratings that way.

My sentiments, also. Before the SDSU game, I mentioned that I was concerned about the game because of the combination of a Top 25 ranking, ESPN2 national television and Fisher's Aztecs. Many of us were disappointed with the Pokes' reaction to SDSU's full court pressure and quick doubling on the post. It seemed like they were reacting in slow motion. Would love to see Shyatt get the program to the point where they expect to be ranked and play like they belong.

So we should aim to be 26th or worse?
The more we play with a target on our back the quicker we learn to win with a target on our back. Eventually they are gonna have to deal with being ranked. Can't be the underdog for ever.

No, we should aim to get into the NCAA tournament. Don't have to be top 25 to do that.

Get there a couple years in a row, and the recognition will come on its own.

GO POKES!

It will take a while for the newness of the top 25 to wear off. For now, it's a bunch of threads on the message boards, ass slapping for all the players, and congratulations for the team: that so far hasn't accomplished anything.

Listen to Shy: happy is for March. Until then, just play basketball and don't let the garbage get to your heads. In the first half of that SDSU game and the game following the big CSU road win, we came out and looked like we just thought our past accomplishments were going to deliver us a victory. We thought we were a better team than we are.

I hope our team can get to the point where it's expected and the team/fans can act like they've been there before. Until that happens it's going to be a distraction with the 5 different threads about it and all the congratulations the players get for winning the mythical January championship trophy.

I want NCAA Tourney appearances, but for my hopes and desires of Wyo hoops, that goes without saying.
I want Wyo to be a consistently Top 15 team with multiple sweet 16's, elite 8's, and even Final 4's, and at least 1 National Championship in the Shyatt era. I want this era- not the 40's, or the 80s the be the best years of Wyo hoops.

I want us to be consistently ranked, and I do understand that being ranked for the first time in a while might have a negative affect on the team, but for where I want them, they need to learn to play AND win with a number next to their name.

I think a little winning streak here to get us back in the polls would be great. The team shouldn't be in aww of it a second time this season.

I guess, in the long-run, I want this team to finish a good chunk of games this season ranked, and make the Sweet 16.
I want the team next year feel disrespected by not being ranked in the Pre-Season polls and fight to prove everyone wrong. Then do it all again.

That's all well and good Beav, and I think just about everyone here wants the same thing. But it won't happen overnight. and considering where this program has been for the last decade or so, it's going to take a few seasons of just getting to the tournament before we get that consistent recognition. Until then, we'll be viewed as another flash in the pan.

But, get to the tourney a few years in a row, and actually make some hay there, and the recognition will come. And when we get to that point, hopefully our guys are used to playing as the favorite. Right now they really aren't, though they are gaining that confidence. And that showed last week against SDSU.

Listen, there's something special about this team, and anyone who says otherwise isn't paying attention. I'm excited to take my kids to their first Cowboy bball game this weekend, and it's been a long time since I've been excited to go see a game in Laramie. Shyatt is doing great things in Laramie, and is putting Cowboy basketball back on the map. I'm grateful for that, but it's going to take some consistent success before the rest of the basketball world takes consistent notice. Until then, we need to enjoy the hell out of this ride, and start making plenty of room on the bandwagon.

I get that it is not an over-night process but let's also not forget that this season isn't the first time this team has been playing well since Schroyer left.

2012-2013 we were on pace for at least NIT if not Big Dance. We were 13-0 and ranked before our best player got arrested for a felony.

2013-2014 we were definitely on pace for the Big Dance until Larry Nance Jr. went down.

Sure, to the casual observer, this team has been in the CBI 3 years in a row. But to anyone who has been paying attention to what the team has been made up of, understands this team isn't just now starting to play basketball at the consistency of an NCAA Tourney team.

I understand suspensions and injuries are part of the game, so I am not excusing their poor CBI finishes, but what I am trying to make clear is that, your are right this is not an overnight process and it does take years to turn around, but in terms of producing high quality, and winning basketball, we are in year 3 of it.

It hasn't been 3 consistent years of it, and that is why we are having this conversation but,
12/13 season: About 1/2 year of high level ball
13/14 season: About 3/4 year of high level ball
14/15 season: So far so good...

So had we not been un-lucky this program would be working on a 2nd or 3rd Big Dance appearance right now and have 1 or 2 NITs as well. Meaning this season is the year we would be expecting a bigger run, and a ranking.

Our lack of success in the past couple seasons was not because we weren't good enough. It was because a poor-choice at the Buckhorn and a torn ACL.

So in my mind, we have had the coaching and talent to get to where we wanted, and that is why this season our goal should be the same as where it would have been even if we had the success we wanted.

If we simply weren't good enough in years 1-3 (shyatts 2nd tenure) then I would have high expectations and hopes for year 4. But we were good enough in years 1-3 and that is why I do have high expectations and hopes.

Years 1-3 SHOULD have been at the very least:
CBI
NIT
Big Dance

Not:
CBI
CBI
CBI

We have been progressing, and now with a senior lead team, a team that has players only recruited by Shyatt (not Schroyer), it is time to show it.

We have to play a better OOC schedule to earn respect. It starts with that, we need a couple bigs and a true point guard. We might have that on the bench or in the recruits committed. I'm not strung out on this season, I expect a top 3 finish in the MWC and at the least a strong performance in NIT. SHYATT must get our program on the road to earn respect early in the season. Our big win is at CSU, and that in the present is no barometer of an NCAA level team. So, let's keep winning and see where the chips fall.

We lost by 8 to a good SDSU team, and went1-1 last week and dropped to 41. From 25 to 41. The two teams that jumped us for the top 25, Iowa#25 and Dayton#22 lost by a combined total of 49 points tonight... Iowa by 32 to Wiscy and Dayton by 17.
Are we really that bad that our loss had to drop us 16 spots?

I'm curious how far down Iowa and Dayton drop after this.

I think Iowa has another game against a ranked team this week, so they may salvage themselves, or they may completely fall off the map.

With conference play going on, it seems like the 15th through 40th spots are a complete revolving door now.
If we beat New Mexico, and a lot of those 20th through 35th teams lose we could jump right back into the high 20s.

It might take a couple weeks but I think the Pokes can get in.

This part of the schedule gets brutal though and any losses can knock us out.

New Mexico, @ Utah State, Nevada, CSU, @ AFA, @ SDSU.
All within the next 3 weeks from tomorrow.

The 3 games after that will be an absolute must win set of games for us: SJSU, @ Nevada, Fresno
Pokes need to kill it in these next 6. I would be happy with 5-1, except for the fact that the 1 L I would be okay with is a team we already lost to.

And with SDSU continuing to win, it makes our loss seem not so bad (for once, since Cal and SMU are otherwise stinking it up).

I agree, except for the part about SMU. They've won 12 of their last 13 with their lone loss being at Cinci. Who beat SDSU.

Smu is 14-4 and 5-1 in conference play.
After a quick glance at their next 4 games they should ve 18-4 or 17-5
They are playing good ball.

Cal on the other hand. 1-4 in a mediocre pac12. 11-7 overall.
Fuck how did we lose to them?!
Held them to 15 points at halftime and lost.

oh well... time to face that they will be a bad loss come resume time.
