Time of Possession

Maybe this hurry up "fast break" offense needs be thought out again. At least until UW has the horses to run it (especially on the defensive side when the O goes back-to-back-to-back 3 and outs in less than 1 minute of game clock each). Or maybe make a mid-game adjustment when you are getting your own defenses ass kicked by having them on the field too long.

From the CST:

"UW is last of 123 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in time of possession with an average of 24 minutes, 31 seconds.

It had the ball 24:33 against Colorado State, and Rams coach Jim McElwain said his team’s 35:27 with the ball was a key in the game.

“On offense we did a great job of keeping their quarterback off the field to keep them in check,” he said. “When you play a (quarterback) like that, your best defense is a good offense. Any time you can limit their possessions – (against) a team that plays up-tempo football – it’s big. We did that with our offense.”

The Cowboys have not possessed the ball more than their opponent in any game this season. In six of seven games the opponent has had the ball between 10:54 and 15:48 longer."

Didn't DC say something along the lines of, "Time of possession is the most overrated stat in college football." ? I believe I read that somewhere recently. However, time of possession coupled with poor tackling, blocking, and lack of simple offensive execution, is what beat us in both the TXST and now, CSU games.

I'm beginning to think that might believe something like "Final score is the second most overrated stat in college football" also.

Funny, Wazzu had the ball for 12 more minutes than Oregon (a mostly rushing team), yet Oregon still blew them out....
Time of possession is a totally worthless stat if your offense can score quickly.

Well, there's that important part right there...

Yep. Back-to-Back-to-Back 3 & outs (especially in the first quarter to start the game) don't work in the hurry up cluster fuck offense. Follow that up with a couple more in the 3rd, and a couple more in the 4th, and that would equal a complete and utter time of possession / scoreboard ass kicking, as we witnessed.

I think what BP was trying to say is that the time of possession is a worthless statistic in most cases, and I tend to agree. Time of possession doesn't reflect a game, the 3 and outs and anemic offense is what killed us in the game Saturday, not the time of possession.

And sadly it shouldn't have been a series of 3 and outs. A couple dropped balls, stupid mistakes, etc. The Pokes continually shot themselves in the foot....and CSU played their best game in years.

We've been about minus 10 in time of possession all year long......and haven't won the T.O.P. battle in any game.

Agree with you both.

However, there may be a slight edge to a team that can grind out 10+ minute drives and control how many touches the other team gets. If the other team's "O" is not on the field, they can't score. That and if you have a weak assed defense (see Wyoming), you keep them fresh and rested.

lack of controlling the ball with t.o.p, and the other team's scoring and you aren't in my opinion really matters, it ain't rocket science. it's what you do with the ball when you have it....duh, like in basketball you can't win if you don't shoot/score the ball

This is the important part - our D needs all the help it can get.

This exactly. If our D is the weaker part of the team, we shouldn't be constantly putting them in the unfortunate position of being on the field as often. The quick paced offense is fine, but you can grind out a few first downs in between the quick strikes. It gives the D a rest and when we don't score, it at least improves our field position.
