Thornton instead of Thompson Q4 ??

Curious what others thought about that decision. I was under the impression it was DC's intention on redshirting Thompson, to give him 2 years as starter after Brett leaves. But then a few posters here commented that Thompson was NOT going to be redshirted, and that he would be playing this year. Puzzled by the decision if that is the case, to say the least.

Thompson will be redshirted this year unless Brett goes down with a lengthy injury.
This is correct. They plan on redshirting Thompson unless Brett has to sit due to injury.

That was my understanding as well - but I do remember there were a couple of posters that said that wasn't going to be the case (redshirting Thompson). And they were adamant about it.

I think it is safe to say they were wrong.

That was me....call me a dumb ass! It is ok I was way off on this one. Thompson will red shirt unless they absolutely cannot afford to let him....ie Smith gets hurt. However here is one for you....Thorton will red shirt this year as well. It is my understanding that they can play a few games and still be eligible for a red shirt.

Way to own it - but you didn't have to. I just vaguely remember the thread. As far as Thornton (include the N) still being able to redshirt, I don't think that is the case. It was always my understanding that once you step on the field in a game and take a snap, you lose your ability to RS unless it was medical - and even then, not sure you can RS (See Devyn Harris for example).

My son plays for the Cowboys and there is a percentage you can play and still maintain your red shirt status. IDk what exactly it is though.

Not sure about the redshirt rules but I trust others that say you can play a bit(i didn't think you could) But I don't think they are too worried about redshirtsing Thornton this year....If Thompson Redshirts this year, then next year we will have smith and Thompson so Thornton can redshirt and the next year you will have Thompson and Thornton. The same situation as if they boith redshirted this year.

I thought the only way you could step on the field and still get a redshirt was that if you got hurt early enough in the season and then applied for a medical red shirt?

It's been my understanding that a student athlete can take a redshirt year anytime before they obtain four years playing. So, if I'm correct, a student could play their freshman, sophomore, and junior year, then redshirt their senior year for a year of eligibility. Also, I think that if a student completes their course of study before they reach the four-year limit and graduates, they can transfer to another school for graduate work and take their final year of eligibility. Russel Wilson did that with Wisconsin and our own Jarrod Darden did that coming from Colorado.

I tried looking up the rules on the NCAA site and it was as confusing as their rulebook itself...

Uhh...this topic has been covered a lot.
Thompson is red shirting.
So he can start for 2 years after Smith leaves.

I have been researching "Redshirt" and everything I have found says you can practice and even dress for play but if they step onto the field to play one down they have lost the eligibility to "Redshirt" that season.

Letting Thornton play this season makes a lot of sense. Let him get some game experience in low pressure situations after they've already wrapped up the game, then let him redshirt next season while Thompson backs up Brett.

I think that is incorrect. I have a friend that is a NCAA rep at Nebraska I will call him and ask.

Agree. But what about Captain Kirk? :P

We'll have to be up by 70 with less than 5 minutes to play for Captain Kirk to see a snap...

This. Only way to play AND redshirt is to play less than 30% of competitions and be injured...and even then you have to apply to the NCAA and they must accept.

You don't have to be injured that is just for a medical redshirt.

This is for a medical redshirt. I believe you can play 10% or less of your teams games in one year and still apply for redshirt status.
