Thinking Back to Last Season

I've been thinking about how we started last year as a comparison to how this year has shaken out so far. Last year, we had a known quantity in B. Hill and really had no idea at the beginning of the season what the offense would look like if every opponent we played stacked 8 in the box to stop our star running back. Then Josh did Josh things... Although, he had guys that were realistically on nobody's radar (someone show me where they predicted Gentry, Maulhardt, Hollister...) to pull together something that nobody could have predicted after the Eastern Michigan game (Remember the gloom and doom?)

Skip ahead to this year. It is my firm opinion that Josh is in Josh's head with all this talk of NFL. He plays not to screw up. That with the combination of having guys that didn't see the field much last year (receivers and RB) and we see the result. Thankfully, someone saw something in a Frosh LB to give him a chance at RB and more important having another receiver in the mix that can catch what Josh is dishing out (Conway can't do it alone....)

We got bullied by a Big10 team (defense was pretty damn good considering) and boat raced by a PAC12 team that scores a shitton of points. Given how we started last year (Lost to F'in Eastern Michigan), I'd say that we give this team a couple more weeks to become what they are going to be. This week with Texas State isn't going to show much (unless it does...) The real test is on the road at Utah State.

Just my $0.02.

Brian Hill leaving us a year early hurt. He could hit non-existent holes. His threat caused the passing game to open up more. We really need that this year.

We aren't recruiting 5 and 4 star recruits. Very few 3's. We have to develop our talent. Much of these players are learning every single day and getting stronger.

Barring any major bouts of injury, I wouldn't count this team out of anything yet.

From what I saw, I think Woods may very well be the main ball carrier. Reminded me a lot of Hill, except maybe a bit quicker. But hit hard, fast, never shied away from being hit, and pushed the pile.

The real issue now, is finding a consistent passing game. Conway is solid, but he's just one guy and tends to get covered quite often. Johnson, not sure what happened. Last season, when he played, he looked at least solid. Now, he's catching maybe 1 in 5 passes to him, and most of those are perfect. He's not the only one dropping passes, but he is notable.

Price caught that big TD in OT, but otherwise, hasn't done a thing this season (injured, I know). If he can be reliable as well, then our offense should at least be solid going forward.

Losing to EMU last year put a sour taste in my mouth FAR worst than anything that has happened this year. In fact I'm still pissed about losing to them TWO years in a row. Please tell me I'm not the only one that thinks about the irony between Josh Allen and his connection to EMU.

Also remember we gave up 69 points to Unlv last year. Albuquerque was not an enjoyable experience

I don't think Hawaii is awful but I wouldn't say the win was one to hang your hat on. But sometimes it's good to win ugly. Eastern Michigan traditionally has been a poor program but last year was a bowl team by far unlv was our worst loss of last year.

I like the progress in the running game and feel like that will continue to improve but the passing game and running game needs to be balanced or we are screwed against quality opponents.

I do think our defense will keep us close against much of our competition but if we want to sniff conference championships and compete with the upper tier we need to make a lot of improvements

We held them to season lows in yards and yards per play. I think they have a good offense, but they have a crappy defense and we still couldn't do jack shit against them. Anyway I bet they finish second in the other division

Obviously they're not as good as SDSU and Hawaii rises to the top of the shit show that's left in that division. Hawaii should score a lot against their division mates.
