Thinking ahead a bit...

While the timing may be off for the game and the ticket sales may be lower than expected, I am quite excited to head to Albucracky on Friday. Not only did we beat CSU this year, I get the added bonus of a bowl game...Christmas came early. The opponent isn't exactly earth-shattering in terms of excitement (although I think they are good, I just never get too wound up about Fresno State), but it really does not matter. We are in a bowl and it feels like something really, really cool is building in Laramie.

We hear of winning recruiting battles with Utah. We see recruits being upgraded. Sure we have lost a couple of recruits too, but the overall trend is VERY encouraging. We hear our current guys talking about the system and how it changed the complexion of the year for the better. We didn't hemorage turnovers. We see new luxury boxes being built (almost burned down, but built none-the-less). It is great (and going to be even greater in the future) to be a Cowboy football fan.

In terms of next year, I like the way the schedule sets up, in terms of our home games. We have away games with down (at least in the context of this year) teams like UNLV and New Mexico and with the teams we likely won't beat for a while (home or away, so it almost is better to have them on the road) like TCU, BYU and Texas. Conversely, we have home games with Utah, AFA, CSU, BSU and SDSU - all winnable games IMHO. This of course, makes no mention of the other teams on our schedule, like Southern Utah and Toledo, which are winnable too. Sure we have some holes to fill, but we have a core group (finally including a QB) around which we can build and some JUCOs that, given DC's and JCintherock's assessments, could be immediate game changers for our offense. All in all, this year is a foretaste of the feast to come (for all of you Lutherans out there). The clouds are building on the horizon for the rest of the conference...and I for one, am glad I will be in New Mexico to see the Phoenix make another step out of the ashes.

I like your post. I think we have a lot of positive things happening right now in the world of Cowboy Football.
Our recruiting, while not on the level of the top 3 teams in the conference, has certainly taken a step up from where it was in the past. The luxury boxes should provide a great new source of revenue for the program, so that 5 years from now we will really see the fruits of that investment.

Next year's schedule is going to be even more difficult than this year though. Looking at it right now, through the eyes of the 2009 season, I would be hoping for 7-5, 5-3 in conference. But A LOT can change between now and then. I certainly hope we don't take a step back like CSU did, but next year is going to be one tough schedule. Should be another top 10 difficulty.

-Texas will be down for their standards, but their standards are a lot higher than ours right now.
-BYU should be down next year as well, but in Provo is one tough cookie and until we prove we're able to even compete with them, I have to pencil that game in as an automatic L.
-TCU will be even better next year
-Same for Boise
-Utah I see about as the same level they are this year, losing some key players on defense, but their QB will have a year under his belt.
-AFA, they are very young this year and only figure to improve.

Those are 6 tough games right there.

Next year could be rough indeed with a very tough schedule to overcome and losing some very good players on the d-line. However, the team this year did a lot better than I expected, so maybe next year will be a good surprise as well. Having more playmakers at WR should help a lot, and now that the players are starting to get used to the new offensive scheme (especially the line), we should be able to rack up some yards. If Kankolongo can become a steady powerback for us, we should be able to move the ball at will against most teams, splitting carries between Stewart, Alexander, Kankolongo, and ACS (three backs starting, could that happen? probably not).

Didn't you know? ACS is the dual player, he runs the ball and throws it.
