The Washington Native Americans

I'm not offended by the term 'redskin' but can completely understand if someone else would be.

Who am I to tell someone when and why they should be offended? I've never lived in their shoes.

I think if my ancestors were murdered, raped, and stripped of their land a hundred years ago and the same people who did it used a derogatory term for my people as a mascot I would likely not feel all that great about it.

I hate this subject, as an Indigenous American, when I came here to read about Wyoming beating New Mexico.
Everytime this subject comes up I get contacted, as an Indigenous American, to comment and teach and it always stirs up so many problems (there are some really thick headed and hateful people out there).
I don't want to be attacked by Wyonation members because because because........

You cannot believe the ignorant Indigenous Americans who don't know history, just like any other ignorant ones, or the apples etc. Apples are brown or "red" on the outside and "white" on the inside, by choice or especially because their historical knowledge has been erased by forces of the past and present (culturally stripped).

[And screw U of Pennsylvania. Penn has troublemakers ........].

The "R" word is a racial slur. There is no way around it. Every time I hear it or see it (I won't even say it here what it does).
We did not use it. We do not use it.
"R" is a dead or dying and mutilated Indian person who has been hacked up and skinned. There is nothing endearing about that to us.
I don't even want to talk about it. I wanted to read about football. I'm actually a fun person, mostly quiet, and this subject always causes fighting and people to decide to hate us. It caused a lot of our ancestors to withdraw etc. Like I said I hate talking about it.

I always like to post the video with Doris in it. I'm watching this happening to one of my tribes now, a tribe not recognised, but still it is a tribe and there are not many speakers of the language and teachers of how to live according to the tribes culture.

Y'all've seen me post it before with Doris, the last fluent speaker of Wichita.

So you're saying a bunch of white guys aged 20-50-something who know hardly anything about dying Native American culture should probably keep their mouths shut when it comes to a topic like this? I agree.

Especially when they refer to what you just described as being a "pussy"?

So basically this is what is happening...
People who are offended at it say: Change it please, it offends us!
People who aren't offended and don't know shit about it say: Why would you be offended pussy?

Well, I don't know what the race or ethnic groups or ages are of the guys here but yeah it's not being a pussy or whatever.

Here is Russell and Juanita on tv years ago. I guess you can listen to it all or especially starting at minute 6 to the end.

It's funny, but no one either remembers or wants admit that the term "Redskins" was used first by many Native American Indian tribes. If it's a term accepted by the same people it describes, why is it the white and blacks are the offended ones?
Serious question, would you call ANY Native Americans "redskins"? Hell, 150 years ago, it was an accepted practice to call black people, and once again I apologize, "niggers" to demean them and keep them seperate from others.

But don't worry. Niggas be all fine to say and shit yo!

Double standards are as bullshit as people being offended.
Cracka! Honky! Whitey!
ERMAGAWD I am so offended
This is just more bullshit that Obama has thrown gas onto so that the fire distracts from the real problems and scandals in Washington

This has been going on long before Obama took office and you know it.

Just remember, don't call me White or Cracker. It's either Caucasian or Italian American. It's kind of sad when the name for the color of your skin creates a race issue, I'd say we're pretty shallow.

A name for the color of someone's skin is by definition a race issue, haha!

But it hasn't gotten people riled up like this until his dumb ass went on camera to stir the pot

I think the most offensive part of the term Redskin is how it generalizes and demeans an entire race of people. When Columbus arrived North America wasn't one nation of Native Americans. It was made up of 1000's of independent society's sharing one thing in common: the color of their skin. They sure as hell WEREN'T referring to each other as Redskins, since the only people they had ever seen had the same color of skin.

It's extremely offensive for a race of people that have been subjected to genocide, religious persecution, legislative acts intended to erase their cultural identity, broken promises, theft of their homelands, rape, murder....Now we take all of these individual nations and lump them all into one category, the redskins, which is a derogatory term: and plaster a cartoon character to represent that racist generalization on the side of the helmet.

Every piece of legislation regarding the Native Americans from 1830(Indian Removal Act) to 1956(Indian Relocation Act) was designed to remove Native Americans from their homelands(resources) and erase their cultural identity, replacing it with a cultural identity similar to the caucasians that just stold their land. Native Americans were forced to become Christians. They were forced to become capatalists.

After we erase their culture/identity we reward them with alcoholism, poverty, and a tiny piece of the most undesirable lands in North America. We generalize every individual native american with a derogatory term and use that term and a cartoon picture to sell football tickets in our nations capitol?

It sickens me to see how Native Americans have been treated and still are treated today.

Great post. It bothers me when people say "I don't bitch when someone calls me a cracker or whitey". I'd argue that that's because those people calling you cracker or whitey didn't murder and enslave your ancestors. It's the equivalent of a Neo-Nazi owned team calling themselves the K*kes.

Again, great post Junky, it's good to see someone think outside their own world.
