On June 1, 1978, LDS President Spencer Kimball had a revelation that african americans could enter the church and become priests. A direct result of the Black 14 incident. The only reason he did that was so african americans would be more likely to play football. In a certain respect UW aided BYU in becoming a football power.

I read a story that Larry Birleffi (former UW sports announcer) claimed Wyoming former AD, Red Jacoby helped BYU athletics. I can't vouch to the accuracy of this but here it is. He said Jacoby told the BYU AD of something that could help them improve their athletic program using the church mission to gain an additional year of eligibility and then a red shirt year. This game them an advantage because their players had an additional year to mature. Like I said, how true this is who knows. For a fact Birleffi was a long time announcer and well connected. It explains why many, if not most of their players are grown men with families.

Interesting. BTW, Red Jacoby was the AD who got Wyoming into the Western Athletic Conference in 1962 as the last charter member of that conference. Two other schools applied for charter membership...Utah State and New Mexico State. Obviously, both got turned down.
