The Front Porch?

I do not. Neither state funds or student fees should go to pay college athletes. That’s a grossly inappropriate use of public resources in my opinion. To the extent there is NIL funds being provided, it should come from private donations.

Instead of seeking those private funds, Burman took the lazy approach of asking the legislature for a bailout. Not only was his approach lazy but it directly impacted funding to academic programs (what state funds should go to as implicated by the Wyoming Constitution).
Isn't the easy answer to this conundrum just to put it to a vote?

Burman claims the survey UW completed showed significant statewide support for using state-appropriated dollars to support UW athletic programs. If that is the case, then put it on the ballot and let Wyomingites decide if using the funds for direct payments to athletes is a step too far or not.

I’m not exactly sure how a specific budget item is put on the general ballot but I agree with the thought. I have little doubt that an item stating ‘should X million dollars from the annual state budget be appropriated to pay student athletes’ would be soundly defeated.

I agree with you, but if it went to a vote, at least we would have a direct answer as to how the majority of Wyomingites feel about it. There would be no more debate and the legislature could proceed according to the people's will. In an ideal world, that is how government is supposed to work.

I have no idea as to the actual process to getting something on the ballot like that. It may not even be possible, but I'd like to see it - give the people a direct voice in the matter.
