NFL clearly got the memo on the public reaction to Sorsby’s ridiculous posture. Well done NFL to call Sorby’s actions out for what they are.
My guess is Sorsby’s next move is to threaten to sue the NFL. Good luck with that.

I would think his next move is to just wait for the 2027 NFL Draft. He is already being paid $5 million by Texas Tech this year to do nothing.
He can spend the year training and rehabbing his image or potentially even play in the CFL if he wants to make some more money.
I wonder if the NFL is thinking more about the future than just Sorsby and his connection with gambling. It seems that gambling is becoming more prevalent, and the league may be trying to send a message to players that the rules against gambling including its own will be enforced.

I think he sues the NFL. Probably under some sort of declaratory judgment claim.
The NFL didn't say to him just wait for the NFL Draft and you will be fine if a team selects you...it said "We encourage you to focus on preparing for possible entry into the NFL through the 2027 NFL Annual Draft..."
The addition of "possible" clearly tells me that a lawyer reviewed this and that the NFL is thinking of potentially its own suspension or sanction to Sorsby under its CBA authorities. I wouldn't be shocked if the NFL is planning to wait for him to enter his name in the 2027 NFL draft and then announces that he is suspended for a year effectively limiting Sorsby's draft potential. This is why I think Sorsby sues so he can have a more definite path forward.

Did he do anything illegal? and how can the NFL punish him for something like this? He's not part of any CBA currently. i assume the CBA gives them absolute power for punishing players so it wouldn't surprise me if they have these kinds of broad powers. Can the NFL punish a player for what they did in middle school?

Sorsby clearly violated important NCAA rules and perhaps state law as well when he wagered on the outcome of his own team.
As i understand, the CBA allows the NFL to enforce its personal conduct policy on players who become members of the NFL for conduct that occurred before they became an NFL player. However, if I’m Sorsby’s attorney I’m probably arguing that he was already disciplined for any such conduct by making him ineligible for the supplemental draft, and, that when he made the bets he wasn’t subject to the NFL’s anti-wagering rules.
If it helps, the CFL announced today that Sorsby is currently barred from entering their league. Like I said, my guess is that Sorsby’s lawyers are going to want clarity on his future eligibility and thus the potential they bring suit against the NFL now related to how the CBA and personal conduct policy apply to this conduct that occurred in college.

Technically, he was underage during the period of time he was placing bets. Also, it's illegal if he purposefully altered the outcomes of games to win his bets (obviously harder to prove).

Yes, tons. Federal felonius wire fraud using Venmo and Zelle, federal felonius interstate gambling, identity theft and fraudulent account creation, plus violations of Texas state law, like underage gambling. I can't believe he hasn't been arrested.
Maybe it’s just me, but it sure feels like the enforcement of various laws has really fallen off since COVID.
Here is Austin, the police won’t even respond to crimes unless they are considered still ‘in progress’. Someone breaks into your home in the middle of the night and you chase them out with your gun and then call 911? The 911 call taker will transfer you to the 311 non-emergency line where you will talk to a city employee who will document your complaint and send it over to the police department. Then they will tell you a detective will be in contact within 2 weeks. The detective will try calling just one single time under a ‘unknown number’. If you don’t answer, the police will say ‘unable to contact complaintant’ and close the case. Ask me how I know.
The cops will all tell you it’s because the liberal DA won’t prosecute crimes and just lets everyone they arrest out anyways. The DA will tell you it’s because the racist cops are quiet quitting to punish people for questioning them during the whole George Floyd thing and aren’t gathering enough evidence where he can actually prosecute.
The whole thing is exhausting. If things are different in Wyoming, you are lucky.

I tell my kids all of the time that the decisions they make can have life altering consequences. I want them to have fun but they need to think carefully about whether the effort can potentially harm them or others. Some of the biggest regrets I have in my life are due to poor decisions I made without thinking things through.
