Since we are talking about the New Mexico game here, this is a quote from New Mexico coach Rocky Long:
(on facing running backs with two different styles):
"I think the real advantage both teams have is that they (running backs) compliment each other so well. You have to be real physical and solid at the point of attack when the big guy is running, then you have to be able to bounce around and catch the little guy. As a defensive player, you have to have a different mentality depending on which running back is in there. You have to decide how solid you're going to come to the line of scrimmage, how light on the feet you're going to be, how strong you're going to plant your feet into the ground to make a tackle. If you plant your feet against (UNM senior) Paul Baker and their quick, little, fast running back (Devin Moore) and all you get is air. You don't plant your feet on (UNM senior) Rodney (Ferguson) or their other big, strong running back (Wynel Seldon) and they run right over the top of you. The scheme will be the same, but the mentality has got to be different from the defensive perspective."
After reading an article like this, I'm just wondering why we aren't using more sets with both Moore and Seldon in the backfield at the same time.
