Study - CFB team value

This is pretty interesting: a finance professor put valuations on D1 CFB teams the same way pro sport teams are valued. Basically, how much could the whole thing be sold for on the open market.

Ohio State is #1 at $1.96 billion, which is more than about half of the MLB and all but a few NHL teams.

Wyoming is ranked 73rd, which is 4th among G5 teams (not including Pac 2)

69. Boise St ($91m)
71. SDSU ($90m)
72. CSU ($74m)
73. Wyoming ($71m)
76. Fresno St ($62m)
80. UNLV ($50m)
84. Utah State ($42m)
89. Nevada ($37m)
100. New Mexico ($29m)
102. SJSU ($28m)
104. Hawaii ($28m)
NR Air Force

Future MW schools:

109. UTEP ($27m)
127. N Illinois ($15m)

Boise St. 69th, just barely ahead of San Diego st.? It's amazing the attention a study like this gets. I don't know his methodology, but the thought Nebraska is worth 14 times Boise St. seems silly. I know it's about more than record, but if Nebraska was worth a billion, you'd think they could win more than 6 games in a mediocre conference like the Big 12.

Nebraska's brand is 14x bigger than Boise's.

That is a pretty funny example to pull out.

Nebraska has fans all over the country. They were a dominant dynasty within the memory of anyone over 40. For more than 60 years they have sold out a stadium that is (now) 2.5 times the size of Boise's for every single game.

Nebraska hasn't been a dominant dynasty since the 90's. Losing records in 8 of their last 10 seasons. In conference, they have not won more than 3 games 8 years running. Again, if their so valuable, why can't they get even mediocre talent or coaching? Yeah, they've sold out that stadium for a long time. BFD. Nebraska hasn't played in a meaningful game in November in at least 20 years. I'll take Boise st. and 12 other schools for 1 Nebraska any day.

I don't think these are meant to be an assessment of "who is the best football program". That being said...these economic lists are always interesting. If we are just talking about raw economic value tied up within these football programs...I do think any B10 school is going to dwarf any MW school...including BSU. According to the "adjusted revenue" figures reported in the list, Nebraska has over 5x the revenue that BSU does...167 million vs 32 million....that alone probably explains 90% of this list.

About every argument you can make for WYO in the top g5, you can make the same argument only bigger for NE.

NE also benefits from being in big10 with better tv networks, time slots, and opponents.

They generate over 200 mill in revenue for athletics and spend 73 million on football (that might be inflated due to a building or something. Previous year was 35 mill).

Bsu is somewhere around 60 mill total athletic budget and 22 mill for football.

Nebraska has way more value than bsu and it's not close.

Yup. They were truly a national brand. A premier program.

Those arguing that Boise State should be worth more than Nebraska are missing some massive pieces of the puzzle in business valuation. Business valuation is often based a lot on cash flow and revenue value. Nebraska’s cash flow almost undoubtedly dwarfs Boise (not a ) State.

The Colorado Rockies are undoubtedly one of the worst teams in MLB and have been for a really long time (basically their entire existence). However, the Colorado Rockies are worth a ton of money because they are a business that turns a massive profit.

If you look at nfl valuations, success doesn't always equal profits and vice versa. Certainly sustained success can boost value like Chiefs and Pats but none touch the Cowboys. Even the Raiders are up there. A lot of the owners are business people who I think focus more on profits than truly winning. Jags are struggling with that now. Lots of contract buyouts and now had to fire the GM because nobody wanted to coach for Baalke. The owner has to decide to keep shelling out cash for a good coach/Gm or settle for cheaper options.

College is probably the same way.
